DOD does have a dedicated office for IT. However, in my personal experience working for a state-level IT bureau, they’ll either just throw it out / surplus it, or if it’s under warranty send it to the manufacturer to have it repaired. Rarely is anything ever done outside of that except simple tasks like replacing memory from a donor computer or swapping out hard drives Just handing over a govt device to a third party individual with potentially classified or confidential information is such an inconceivably bad idea that the only possible reason I can imagine is that the device was either public/shared (like those computers you find at rest stops) and isn’t connected to the govt network, or some idiot broke his screen and was too embarrassed to tell anyone. Not sure how it is for federal government but I had to get an FBI background check, prints taken and all, and I have to do so every 5 years in order to keep my job as a tech

Tip on opening the Surface Pro. 1: Once you lift the glass with your suction cup, pour in a drop (or less) of 100% IPA into the adhesive under. This will make the adhesive brittle and very easy to separate. 2: Use a softer prying tool. I used the foil-plastic corner part of a blister pack of pills/capsules/medicine. Rigid enough to slice through the adhesive but soft enough not to break the glass. I also pour the drop of IPA through here as I slice through so that it gets to the tight/kiss part of the adhesive.

I hate these fragile glued on screens. We had a 20% failure rate on the Surface Pro 3 - battery, SSD, or WiFi , all of which require removing the screen. None were cracked when I started, and I heated them as much as possible without damaging the LCD or battery. They cracked anyway. I'd get close, but I suspect the small indents near the speakers and strong glue stressed the glass. The only time I've had an intact removal were when the battery got spicy and pushed it off from the inside.

Although the DoD warning on the startup is good (all the words and stuff) I don’t think this is allowed due to OPSEC. And the money the government and military puts into its tech dept. and plus I currently use a dell laptop for naval engineering. If it is real must not be for field use

You could get into trouble with the DoD if your workplace isn’t a secure area and you don’t have security clearance to be working on those devices if you aren’t contracted by the DoD and this is just someone getting their work machine fixed you shouldn’t do it again just in case

Guys, there isn't any vital information on that device. It logs into servers, so it's basically the same as the rest od the devices. Most government branches don't use inside people for these jobs because they don't get repaired, usually devices get wiped and re sold back to the manufacturer to get replaced, I imagine this device is set on one account for the branch and its more cost effective to repair it rather than replace it. THE MORE YOU KNOW.

The repair shop I worked for awhile ago wouldn't even accept Surface devices from customers for screen/battery replacements, because of how difficult it can be to make them work right after.
@george-broughton

It's a surface. It isn't worth repairing. So, i worked in an organization that had these and they all eventually died of the same problem. The screens would ghost super bad and it was due to thermal expansion and contraction of the GPU, and how that damages the bonding between the silicon die and the the interposer it sits on, that is soldered to the motherboard. They'd do this after about 2 - 3 years of use. Not worth anyone's time unless it's solely for data recovery imo.
