Fixing a cracked 78RPM record using a USB soldering iron type tool. Does it work and how does it sound? #78rpm #78rpmshellac #gramophone #phonograph #recordrepair #crackedrecord #brokenrecord
I do the same thing, but use a spot of Super Glue. One small drop at the lead in, does the job. Unfortunately, the "click" will always be heard, but at least, the record is saved and playable.

Yes, super glue is very useful for this, too. You might like this video where I use it for repairing records: kzitem.info/news/bejne/qKOa1maOpqSQfaA Thanks 😀 👍

My first attempt at repairing a shellac record was a success. If I ever try it again it will almost certainly go wrong because tha't how my luck runs.

I’ve tried a blob of superglue both sides and it came out much like yours with noticeable clicks. I use clamps instead of tape but it appears not to be any better. I’m much better at fixing bites out of the edge, but only if it doesn’t involve the grooves so it’s just for aesthetics really. I’ve heard some people fix needle drop damage in the grooves with superglue but I’ve tried that also without success.

Thanks 😀 👍. Nail varnish is another material I have seen used for groove damage and needle drops, but not yet tried it myself. I have a few records with bites and I will try superglue on them

@@mrrgstuff just in case I have misled you, I use a two part epoxy on the bites not superglue. Cheers, D

@@davidk6271 Thanks, that's interesting. Hadn't thought of 2 part epoxy. I have successfully used superglue on record bites, it seems to stick shellac quite well 😀 👍

I've only tried melting shellac (bit of a broken record) into a crack at the edge. Sanding down helps but just the take the roughness off. I'm not sure if it would really hide the damage. For damage in the playing area, I have heard people using nail varnish to fill up little holes, but not tried it myself. Good luck. Thanks 😀 👍

I guess that with something like Audacity, you might be able to remove the click if you were trying to save the recording, rather than the record. I know that wasn't the point of the video, but it is a feature on Audacity I have never used 😊😊
@mrrgstuff
2 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed, Audacity would remove the click just fine. As it's a regular timing it might even do it for all the clicks automatically rather than doing one at a time. I didn't actually use Audacity for this video, but for things like phonograph cylinders or those coin op recording booth records, it's very useful for reducing the background noise and pulling something listenable out of the recording. Thanks 😀 👍

I glued my favorite 78 with 5 broken pieces around nearer the edge. So many pops but I still love it. Yesterday i bought the CD and now I feel dirty. Forgive me

Never thought of melting the shellac to seal cracks. Might try this on my Coasters 78 that unfortunately cracked when I dropped it. Once I find a replacement I’ll try the idea

Nice method, I accidentally cracked my gotham record by holding the record on the edge too hard and I tried this similar method but with super glue and both side actually play fine, it has 12 loud clicks on the A side.

Have you tried to rub a little paraffin into the crack? Then play the record to clear out the excess.

I have not tried baking soda, but have heard it works well. Yes, I agree that it is important to keep the glue away from the grooves and put it only on the edges. Interesting to hear about your experiments. Hope you manage to fix some of your records. I have a drawer full of broken records, so I may make some more videos about them. Thanks 😀 👍
