For anyone who's wondering: Battery chargers usually won't try to charge up a battery if the voltage is too low. What this trick does is temporarily bump up the battery voltage so the charger recognizes it as a good battery. Now... The reason they don't charge up batteries with low voltages is because it's dangerous. It puts a lot of stress on the battery and can cause them to overheat. Best practice is to never use batteries without a BMS. These will prevent under and overvoltage situations so you never need to do this trick to your batteries.

1) it does work 2) it doesn’t matter that it works because once a lithium cell drops below 3.2v the damage is done and it will never recover. It will charge but not fully and won’t hold it or deliver the current it used to. It will get worse until it’s completely useless 3) forcing a lithium cell to charge could cause it to catch fire, even later on the normal charger I know they’re expensive but I’m a battery technician by profession and once they’ve been discharged too much it’s best to leave them completely dead and dispose of them. What little life you can regain from this isn’t worth the risk of a fire.

There are cheap ones that kinda suck but get the job done and there are expensive ones that will let you use a smart phone app. The problem with a strictly voltage related switch is that lithium battery voltages can sag under high current loads such as an electric motor starting up, so getting an accurate voltage reading is hard

Just as a Tipp : If you do this with adding a low ohm resistor to the wire (1-5 ohm), you don't get the spark and make sure not to damage the electronics (BMS) which may be integrated inside the Battery. If you don't have a low ohm resistor, try this with a low charged battery instead of fully charged battery (around 10-20% charged), to reduce the voltage difference between the batteries. So you will reduce possible damage to one of the batteries.

You very much need to be careful. Use a fuse for one of the contacts to avoid bursting the cell with high amps. Letting them run so low is also terrible but you can potentially start a fire using just wire to bump charge it.

Lithium ions are not damaged when they go below 3v, they can actually go to .5v safely as long as they are safely charged back up. The only limitation is that the dendrite formations will increase significantly causing the lifespan and usable MAH to decrease. I would instead buy a hobby charger to ensure youre not parallel charging like that. Doing it like this can cause a fire quickly. A hobby charger set to NiMh at .1a would be much safer.

A similar trick works with dead car batteries. If your trickle/maintenance charger doesn't recognize it, just jump a good battery to it, hook up the charger until it recognizes that a battery is attached, then you can remove the jumper. It just needs to see some voltage to start. That was lead acid chemistry though, people are warning about doing this with Lithium. I guess it depends on the speed and current of your charger.
@BrandonDenny-we1rw

It depends on the battery. Lead acid batferies are safe to trickle chargw because its large open components submerged in solution. Lithium batteries use the metal in an enclosed packet that can burst and explode if exceeded capacity or damaged

I use Ryobi batteries for my scooter over DeWalt. Because (from taking them both apart) DeWalt batteries don't have a BMS that can shut themselves off. So you can just discharge them to nothing and damage them. With their tools they cutoff the power when the battery gets to a low voltage. But with Ryobi batteries they have a low voltage cutoff in their BMS, so you can't discharge them too far even if you slowly discharge them.

@@tummytub1161 - need to open the pack to access the cells directly. The Dewalt packs actually have external balance connections but you need to find a connector and decode the connections. Easier to open the pack and know you are connecting correctly. Whilst I own numerous complicated charger, for bumping cells I use a small USB powered adjustable power supply, set to about 3V and 200mA. Then I charge each cell individually and then check their self-discharge after 24 hours. If they equally hold the low voltage charge, they are safe to go onto the proper charger. Many under-voltage cells can come good with gentle treatment. The worst possible thing to do is hammer a ton of amps into an already vulnerable cell with low voltage.

With single cells, reverse shorting for a few seconds (Putting the base of the bad cell to the base of a charged one and a jumper between the tops.) will often reset an overly discharged cell. Parallel jumping a lithium battery is dangerous as it can overload the one or more cells in the battery that have fully discharged. It is safer to disassemble the battery and find the offending cell and just treat that one.

It’s called battery equalization and it’s why you don’t mix old and new batteries in a tool. It will quickly drain the new battery trying to equalize the voltage and if it’s not a rechargeable battery it will just do it til the new battery dies because it can’t equalize the voltage. And yes dropping a lithium battery below the minimum voltage will cause it to form a thick oxide layer that can seriously reduce the lifetime of the battery. However the real problem is the more oxide there is the higher the internal resistance and the higher the internal resistance the hotter it will get discharging and charging and it can be a fire hazard.
