A real time repair to a finer gauge sweater with a snagged hole in the sleeve. I used a latch hook from a knitting machine to catch up the stitches that were developing runs above and below the hole, then threaded a darning needle and replaced the three missing stitches in the affected row. The yarn is a discontinued kidsilk mohair that I had in my yarn stash. If you only have a small crochet hook, that can work too, or you can even use a pair of tweezers to reach through the stitch loops to grab the waiting yarn to be pulled through: work with what you have.
The trick is to figure out the margins of the damage and stabilize them first, then replace missing material. In this video, it's a few passes of a darning needle. In the other repair video I have posted, it's a large hole that required re-knitting a few rows with replacement yarn.
I try to keep bits of yarn around specifically for repairs, for store-bought and hand knits alike.
