@@cryobyte33 Haha, no worries. I'll probably play Cyberpunk 2077 over the holidays so you've gotten to that before me :) Now you've gotten me tinkering with HZD. What I find interesting is the game allows FSR (In menu: Display -> Upscale Method) even at native 1280x800 resolution. Maybe it effectively turns on dynamic resolution? I can't quite tell. This can hurt the visuals but it significantly increases FPS and smoothness for me. There's a pretty clear tradeoff when adjusting the Upscale Quality, with 'Performance' obviously running best and looking worst and vice versa for the 'Quality' option (this one looks almost as good to me as no FSR). Using in-game FSR disables the Adaptive Performance FPS setting and the ability to switch Antialiasing to FXAA though. The results definitely seem better IMO but I'm not measuring carefully like you do. Also I like to throttle the TDP to help improve battery and control heat & fan noise. 8 Watts is my sweet spot for many games but it makes HZD pretty choppy. After a few benchmark runs, 11 W might be a better compromise. Try it with the in-game FSR set to Quality, you might be surprised!

Just some notes to add. Performance hud shows total RAM and VRAM. Game eats 5 to 6 GB VRAM with default 1GB UMA so RAM not climbing above 11GB is just because Deck do not have more. Setting adaptive frame rate to 50 and cap on 40 will mean that you are always playing with lower settings. So setting Deck to use 4 GB UMA will lead to 7 GB used VRAM and 9 for system which is not enough that's why lows are so low because system is swapping. Also showing 60 % CPU load do not have any meaning, you have to show individual threads. Because if one core is capped it will be bottleneck, though CPU is 40 % (like in God Of War).
@cryobyte33
Жыл бұрын
Heya, thanks for watching! Let me respond point-by-point: "Performance hud shows total RAM and VRAM. Game eats 5 to 6 GB VRAM with default 1GB UMA so RAM not climbing above 11GB is just because Deck do not have more" This is true, but by using my swap and swappiness changes most games easily consume more than that, including Horizon. In the baseline I mentioned that to express that the RAM was stretched to its limits, but after doing the swap and VRAM changes that was changed. "Setting adaptive frame rate to 50 and cap on 40 will mean that you are always playing with lower settings." Yes, this is also true, but is necessary to avoid a lot of hangups due to the GPU scheduling. I determined that not dying in the middle of combat was more important than some visuals 🙂 "So setting Deck to use 4 GB UMA will lead to 7 GB used VRAM and 9 for system which is not enough that's why lows are so low because system is swapping." This goes back to point 1. The lows are lower WITHOUT swap, so I think I may have mis-conveyed my point. With my swap changes (and VRAM change), the lows are MUCH higher than default, so swapping is actually helping here, at least in conjunction with a swappiness of 1, which I always recommend. "Also showing 60 % CPU load do not have any meaning, you have to show individual threads. Because if one core is capped it will be bottleneck, though CPU is 40 % (like in God Of War)." Showing "60% of the CPU" was a narrative device, as I personally saw the workload split across all 8 cores. You can also see this in the "recommended presets" section, in the overlay. If the core load was asymmetric, then I would share the results per-core 🙂 I hope this helped, and thank you again for watching!

I tried your recommended settings, but even using Cryotools to get the 4GB VRAM, 16GB swap file and swap tendency set to 1, I could never get a smooth 40 FPS. There were very frequent dips to mid to high 30s. However, I found using similar settings at an 1152 x 720 dynamic resolution with a target 40 FPS worked better. I was able to hit 40 FPS much more often. Additionally, you can use 1280 x 720 using in-game FSR upscaling set to ultra quality or quality. I found this to actually to be the smoothest and hold 40 FPS the best, but unfortunately you can't use dynamic resolution with it.
@cryobyte33
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I mentioned that there are unavoidable spikes in the "preset preface" section, because of that. I only noticed a 4% increase in FPS dips, but using your chosen settings noticeably degraded quality, so I opted for a few more dips instead. I'll also mention that the dips are heavily location based, with some areas having no dips and some having more frequent dips. That said, my settings are a framework to build off of if you'd like. I can't hope to give everyone a preset that they feel is perfect, but I try to give enough that you can make educated tweaks to reach your desired performance 🙂 Thank you for watching!

@@cryobyte33 Interesting. I've noticed pretty significant differences in performance for my Steam Deck. @cryobyte33
Жыл бұрын
@@JonnyLin7 on Deck, you get most of the shaders automatically downloaded so you don’t need to compile many, if at all. Shader building also depends per-game. In games without shader building included, like HZD, then you need to actually witness something using the shader in game in order to have DXVK build it. Because of that, waiting on the main menu will only help build the shaders on the main menu itself 😓

This is really the problem with making such changes not considering that it is ENTIRELY possible to make performance worse under certain circumstances I can tell you one thing for certain.. the engine used by Far Cry absolutely shreds through your CPU and is one of the most ridiculously CPU bound game engines out there. If you look up PC processor gaming benchmarks, it's insane the FPS increases you can get by using a faster CPU With that in mind... it doesn't sound like a great idea to forcibly lock down a portion of the available RAM so it cannot be used by the CPU (even if using it is potentially a good thing...)

how about FSR ultra quality? it's a nice to have that gains extra fps with minimal visual impact. And isn't there a need to lower reflection quality too because I heard it's quite demanding. By the way I also have an issue that the game stutter when I travel to a different area, which recovers after I stay put for a while (I think is related to shaders), do you know a solution for that?
@cryobyte33
Жыл бұрын
Let me address these 1-by-1: FSR Ultra quality didn't have a large enough gain over native to warrant using it in a preset, but it was tested. Reflections are very demanding, but disabling them didn't "bump" the FPS into the next comfortable bracket, so I was able to turn it up a bit for the same FPS lock. As for the lag, that's what I mention as being unavoidable in this video, that said the upcoming CryoUtilities version should help with it a bit. You should see a video coming out for it in the next week 🙂 Thank you for watching!

Something odd that I observed in this game: When the in-game upscaler is turned on, regardless of what it is set to (even FSR), the game has poorer performance and worse image quality when compared to the Steam Deck's FSR. I'm not sure about others, but I personally saw that performance was better using the overlay FSR, but the quality was noticeably worse, particularly in text and fine details. great video. Out of intereset, how do i obtain this version of proton? I can only find 7-5 and that wont hold 40 on your recommended setting. Instead of saying VK3D it says gamescope. Any advice? Ive tried a few different proton versions and it always seems to say gamescope. Does that mean im running in DX11 and you have 12 running with VK3D? Thanks.
@cryobyte33
Жыл бұрын
Let me break down each point: Proton version: Valve removes older "minor" versions, but 7.0-5 SHOULD have similar performance. If it doesn't, like you said, then you can try a GE-Proton version from a similar data as the video's release, in this case GE-36 is likely okay. GameScope: This is just a display thing, SteamOS 3.4 and higher hides VK3D and DXVK versions for some reason, but they're still being used. If you want to actually see the version numbers you can't use the built-in overlay, you need to use MangoHUD, which is the overlay I use in the video. DX11 vs DX12: You'll see DXVK when using DirectX11 and VK3D when using DirectX12, GameScope isn't involved. Hopefully this helps, and thank you for watching!

At least when I played it a couple months ago, I noticed when these large frame drops happen the CPU gets hammered hard and goes to max clocks. When playing on my Windows PC, I found I was able to mitigate the frame drops to nearly nothing on my 3800X/3080 by locking to 60 fps. Running unlocked from 80-120 fps (with gsync) didn’t give the CPU enough headroom to take these drops without stuttering. Hello. All I have to ask you is, can you choose which SSD to configure for swap? Is there a way to force a sector of TLC or QLC to only write to and read off of the first layer like SLC? I imagine a fast swap with a sector sacrificing 2/3 - 3/4 of the bits on an M.2. There is also a 64 gig emmc. I dont know how to test speed. Can’t memory be compressed in software? No way linux is expected to be understood in the same world as single family zoning laws
@cryobyte33
Жыл бұрын
Let me answer your questions 1-by-1: Q: can you choose which SSD to configure for swap? A: You can technically put it anywhere, but SteamOS only wants it in /home, so it's on the main SSD in the Deck, at least until they let us persist the location without tinkering with the read-only filesystem. Q: Is there a way to force a sector of TLC or QLC to only write to and read off of the first layer like SLC? I imagine a fast swap with a sector sacrificing 2/3 - 3/4 of the bits on an M.2. A: Not on our end, this is all handled by the SSD's controller and we aren't given the power to choose sectors or anything like that. Only creating partitions will have the SSD guarantee us continuous stretches of disk, but even then we can't choose how the sectors are written. Q: There is also a 64 gig emmc. I dont know how to test speed. A: I plan on getting one to test, but other users have reported that it helps them as well. Best as I can tell, it get's about 60% of the performance boost of the 512GB deck with the fixes enabled at a swappiness of 100, and about 90% at a swappiness of 1. Q: Can’t memory be compressed in software? A: Yes, this is the concept of ZRAM, you can see me mention it in the "Other things I tried" section. ZRAM definitely helps over the base configuration, but it's slightly slower and worse than a larger swap file and swappiness of 1. In addition, it relies on you creating a RAMDisk to page off of, which means that it has a fixed size. The Deck's dynamic VRAM allocation means that you can only ever use 8GB of ZRAM to store data unless you want to permanently short the GPU, which limits ZRAM's use massively. Q?:No way linux is expected to be understood in the same world as single family zoning laws A: I recommend looking at the video I mention in this one, EASY & SAFE Health & Performance Boosts. It explains a decent amount about swapping and swappiness, and also explains TRIM since it was made prior to Valve including it natively 🙂 Thank you for watching, and I hope this helped answer your questions!

I would guess that your clock speeds are probably very low. Make sure that they aren't locked to a low value, which is a known bug. If they are locked between 200-400Mhz, then you'll need to follow the steps that Valve support put in a forum thread: --- * Power the Steam Deck down normally. * Hold down Volume+ and press the power button. The Steam Deck should boot into the BIOS menu. * Use the D-Pad and A, navigate to "Setup Utility" and then to "Power". * Choose Battery storage mode, and confirm. The Deck should power off, and the LED will blink three times. Wait a couple minutes, plug the Deck in using the provided power supply, and turn on the Steam Deck. If the external port or charging isn't working for you after the above, please contact Steam Support so we can help you directly. --- Thank you for watching!
