My iGaging calipers started going haywire around certain marks. Since they're absolute, they continue to work reliably in regions of the slide where they're not haywire. But it's sure annoying being unable to measure anything ~100mm long.
Turns out, they're easy enough to fix: the error is due to some kind of contamination on the PCB that reads the slide pattern.
To fix:
1) put some denatured alcohol or Isopropyl on the slide
2) open and close the calipers vigorously a bunch of times
3) wipe dry with a paper towel, and continue sliding until all alcohol has dried.
Also, if you spill alcohol on polyurethane, it'll eat right through it. Wipe it up quick.
