Some DIY advice: Preheat an oven to 215~270 °F. Put the headlight in for 5~7 minutes to soften up the adhesive, then pry them open easily! Then, reseal it with OEM Grade Butyl headlight sealant. Like this: kzitem.info/news/bejne/wqSElqqPe5xniKQ and kzitem.info/news/bejne/0Y99qmqQjnODnXY I've done it to my Model S headlights to paint the inside assembly black.

Is your model S 2016+ or older? Older ones have completely different headlights (much better quality). Generally speaking, I agree with what you saying, but.... Let’s talk about oven for a second. It will work, yes, but these headlights are veeeeery cheap, I actually melted some front “glass” while using heat gun, so there is a strong possibility to damage top coat of headlight. Also, very important argument against using oven is that you have to use different oven from what you use to cook food. Melted plastic (even tiny amounts) is the last thing you want inside your oven - it will stink and I don’t think it’s just good for you. However, if you do have separate oven just for stuff like that and if confident in quality of headlight (I am not) you could certainly do it in much “smarter” and easier way than I did. I would like to see what you did with your lights for your Tesla!
@jaeeboom

@@DealerofHappiness The quality of the headlight "cheap" or not has nothing to do with using the oven method. A heat gun is more of a direct heat source that has a much higher temperature. Experienced modders know how to properly do this though. I noticed that you were keeping the heat gun too long in one area, instead of continuously moving it along the seal/edges. That's why you melted your headlight. Whereas an oven will heat the headlight evenly. Which is why that method has been used by automotive DIY modders for years on Honda Civics, Acuras, etc. It's a proven method. Just search here on KZitem. You'll find countless of examples.

My understanding is these LEDs don't burn out. The issue is very likely that they unsolder themselves from the heat. Unfortunately it doesn't look like amateur soldering equipment can fix this.

It seems like a re-design should be made, if your assessment is correct. To me, it looks that way. Sorry that you had to go through all that trouble to reach that piece. Hopefully, it gives you some closure, to know what the issue actually is. If I were you, I would take the part to your closest service center, and work with them to relay the information back to Tesla, although they probably already know this. Even show them the relevant parts of your video.

Glad it was helpful in any way. DRL lights up on corners, there is nothing in the middle, just a plastic tube reflecting the light - which is why it always looks like it is dying from the “end” towards the corner as the end one is the one usually the one that dies first

@@DealerofHappinessyou actually never describe what caused the problem. You pointed out where the LEDs were. You never even plugged them in to see if any of the LEDs were burned out. And also why a parts of the diffuser don’t show light. It is more likely the diffuser is not allowing light to pass through since the LED is only at one end.

Thanks for the video, can you PLEASE tell me what cables you put 12volt into to test the headlight? I have one that i need to test. I would agree with that theory. Also those LEDs are the smallest (cheapest) I ever seen in my life... LED that Tesla use for lighting buttons in steering wheel are about 3 times bigger. I’ve been messing with this for a while. I just disconnected the DRL wire in the headlight housing so no more DRL. Looks better than faded lights. Is the white part of the DRL a tube? Can you dremmel it in half and add bright aftermarket strip lights that change color? Or would gluing aftermarket strip lights behind the white tube without cutting it in half work?
@DealerofHappiness

Regarding your option to add aftermarket strip: Yes it is a tube going across entire headlight, and yes both of your options are possible, however dealing with disassembling entire case without ruining it is a much bigger issue here.
