I see alot of people pointing out the brake pipes should really be replaced (i know this) but the guy at the garage told me to just try cleaning them up first as thats what he does and its usually enough. If it fails on them again then obviously i will change them, and even if it passes i will change them asap.

hey mate, you can still take a MOT failure with dangerous faults away from the garage, eg: if you are going to fix it yourself or taking it to another garage, however, you can get fined £2500 plus 3 points..but to be honest maybe the garage will call the police once you have left if they are pissed off your not going to use them..my mates car had 2 faults and he drove away to fix it himself and the national tyres garage were not happy about this..he told them he wasn't paying the £650 they quoted and could fix the car himself for under £120..

Hi, my comments are based upon my being an MOT tester for over 20 years. Years ago a corroded brake pipe would fail if pitted by corrosion. Then as is the case either someone complains or whatever about them failing. The argument was how far do we know the corrosion has gone. So we then were told to advise. The criteria is now excessively corroded. Yours were clearly not excessively corroded. A simple advisory was required. The emissions. You did not state what the print out said. If it passed the hc co and lambda to the limits the only other criteria is if after the fast idle on return to idle that the engine emits DENSE blue or black smoke for over 5 seconds, and also during fast hard acceleration the engine produces excessive blue or black smoke which obscures other road users vision. Now that's an awful lot of smoke and in reality an engine that bad would likely fail all the other required limits. So from my point of view it is like certain testers are taking their own personal view and not just applying the correct standards. I suggest when you take a vehicle and are presented with a list of failure items that you go to the government website and read the failure items. Then discuss it with the tester. If you have brake pipes for instance ask the question are they EXCESSIVELY corroded? If they say no, then you are in your right to object. As far as your car if they failed for excessive corrosion and you clean and paint them. It is obvious enough that they are the same pipes. So if he decided they were excessively corroded before how can he pass them after? The answer is they weren't a fail in the first place!

If the cars fixable for £200 then its good to do, but not as a project. It's worth £400 with 12months MOT, as you get a cheap runabout for a year. As for insurance, to buy our most basic ins for a car would be anything upto a £2500 per year. An older driver with 5years no claim bonus maybe could get that down to £3-400 per year.

I would say that oil filter ia between 4 and 8 years old, that's the problem, people cut corners to save money. Remember, whenever you change your engine oil, remove the filler cap first, if not the drainage process will create a vacuum in which some of the dirty oil will be retained within the engine. Had you removed the filler cap before putting the sump plug back on in this video, more dirty oil would have splashed out of the sump as the vacuum was broken.

Those ford zetec engines are usually some of the best in my opinion, I work at a breakers yard and every single one I've stripped down has the honing marks still on the cylinder walls with no lip at the top of the bore from wear. If you get your finger and feel the top of the bore a worn engine would have a lip usually about one cm down where the rings don't quite rub to the top. The always have smooth cam lobes as well, I've taken apart some with over 200k on the clock and they always amaze me how good they are inside, same with the black top and st170 engines. Seeing it first hand they are some of the most reliable engines imho.

The lack of regular servicing will most likely explain the smoking. The old oil will have broken down and got thinner with age so you might not have needed the stop smoke additive. Please change the air filter ASAP as that will probably be clogged for the same reason. It WILL help with the emissions (not to mention the fuel consumption). I change my engine oil every 6 months (I'm about to do the oil change on the Citroen) and the annual service and fuel treatment just prior to the MoT. Don't forget to chuck a bottle of Redex in the tank to clean out the fuel system.
@JamesAllen300

Something worth doing with oil changes is having a funnel of some kind so you don't spill oil all over your engine. You could buy one, or you could use an old 2l bottle and some superglue like I did. Cost me nothing and keeps the engine nice and clean. All you do is cut the top off, then cut a bit of the middle out and stick it through the hole in the top, then glue it together so it seals and doesn't leak. Stop smoke does work though, I had to use it on my old diesel when it started smoking and the wynns cleared it up. Good luck with the retest.

There seems to be 2 avenues of thought in this comments section. 1, I want that 12 month ticket even if I have to dupe the MOT tester and 2, I want that 12 month ticket so I know my car is going to be safe. Removing the visible rust from a corroded brake pipe doesn’t give it a new lease of life nor does it then qualify as an MOT pass. There really is no way of checking how deep that corrosion has eaten into the thin wall of the brake pipe.

Don't know if anyone else has said it before me but I wouldn't run the car whilst jacked up at an angle in case the oil lifter ends up out of the oil when it all falls to the rear of the sump. Just something i've always kept in mind when changing oil at home because unless you've dismantled the same engine previously, you can't tell where the lifter sits in the sump and how much tolerance there is before it becomes uncovered. Unlikely to happen but not worth the risk when you can run it and then jack it up without losing all the oil temperature.

May I point out the fact that you cannot check the oil on the dipstick if you have car jacked up, the engine will be on the tilt thus causing it to give you a false reading on the dipstick, just a tip when changing the oil, the last thing you want is for it to look like there’s more oil in the engine or less than there is cheers

that oil filter didnt look like it had been changed for years !! if you call yourself a car person then that should have been serviced and had a good going over when you got the car

Worth while considering spray paint in the can top then using cotton buds or small brush in future if it helps.

Why does so many people in the UK run mismatched tyres on their car? I honestly have not seen this anywhere else. It should be a MOT failure IMO.

sekopiski prices of tyres in the UK and you can mix tyres no problem if you don’t mix on the same axel which is not a MOT fail as far as I know

Hi mileage engines is when its around 500,000 KM + likemind holden 1998 VT berlina which still had a fuel consumption rate of around 700 to 8002 Km per tank, why because i used only the best friction modifiers i could be wynns ,but not off the shelf stuff or bytron products and also real good injector cleaner and also making sure my coolant is done when required and always put in radiator stop leak just in case and also injector cleaner when required over all the power it made when i got it tested it loss only 10% from a new factory engine so like anything look after it and it will look after your especially if you do the preventative maintenance required for the running gear, as far as the oil you put in which is around 4.3 liters and then the wynns products which is around 400 to 500 ml, thats makes the total oil level at over 4.7 liters when it only takes 4.3 liters, cheers :)

You have a big following and you have a responsibility to know what products you are using and exactly what they do don't just guess if someone uses this in an engine and then 6 months 12 months later does damage just know what you are using and tell people so they understand exactly what it can do or can't do so they can make a decision whether you use it or not mechanic in a can is not the solution the solution always is to know what you are talking about and fix it properly
