The furnace or oven he used in this video and the one he uses in all of his precious metal videos are furnaces where i come from. The series about his other metal melting device where is was made of cement and used motor oil as fuel instead of electricity was a foundry rather than a furnace. When you guys say oven what comes to mind is the thing in your kitchen you use to cook things.

I found funny thing about silver ring of mine. I forgot it in backpack pocket, where was baking soda strayed (dont ask, it just happened). After some month I found the ring and it is pretty shiny. So I left it there and add one golden ring. Both are now shining as stars. I wonder if it is some chemical reaction or it is the abrasive of the baking soda.

Playsand is fine for big projects with cheaper materials bro, Because you can grind off defects on the surface, but doing that with silver makes a lot of waste you need to take a little more time and effort with your investment if you wanna make a ring (or anything smaller than a golf ball) sift the sand, or purchase very fine sand, because that's probably what's getting in your way. And losing the second vent contributed to your void for sure, the pressure had nowhere to go, But the bigger issue for that void was the pour, Your stream stopped, it hardened on contact with the insides of the mould, then it had silver poured back on top, ONE SWIFT MOTION, Pour it like you don't give a damn And let the funnel you carved on top do it's work It's tricky, but that's the best advice I got, Play with pewter until you see what I mean on the pour, It's cheaper. If you've ever played with resin you know that the pour is super important to avoid bubbles and voids, But the technique is literately as opposite as can be for small metal castings, Slow and methodical just invites freeze clots, One blob of metal should hit your funnel one time only. (Again, with parts smaller than a golfball, Greater size pours have more energy) Just remember how thermally conductive silver is and you'll see why it is that way. Love your work, learning a lot about bees and chemistry. keep at it Broseidon, Lord of the Brocean.
@TheValveBoy
7 жыл бұрын
Cody, if you do more jewelry casting I would recommend either doing a dip coat of plaster around your wax mold or all plaster mold. Additionally heating the mold helps with eliminating the defects and bubbles. You could even heat the mold after the silver is pored and then put it in a vacuum chamber to really get the fine details.

Hello Cody! After watching your first video on the ring making, and as I myself also sometimes do some small scale gold refining, and I got an idea! As a goal to myself, I decided to get enough gold out, and refined to cast in to a ring, to give as a engagement ring! It's a good goal, and after talking with my girlfriend, she said she would accept my proposal when the ring is ready, not a day before! I'd like to thank you for this awesome idea! Keep it coming!

Great vid as always!! One minor correction. 4:35 - Hydrogen chloride is a gas at room temperature. What I assume you're adding is aqueous HCl, which is called hydrochloric acid not Hydrogen Chloride. I know I'm being very picky. But I'm sure you like to be as accurate as possible in your videos and they are two different substances.
@ib9rt
7 жыл бұрын
I guess from a procedural point of view his purpose was to add a solution of hydrogen chloride in water, since he wanted the chloride ions to precipitate out the silver. In this application the "chloride" bit is much more relevant than the "acid" bit. For anyone following along, describing it this way better communicates the intent of the action.

Cody, I think I like this ring maybe more than the original. It looks more professional, especially with the shine of the silver and how the gold bead is more integrated into the band than last time, where it bulged out. That seemed to me like it could get easily scratched. All in all, I think you have certainly improved your jeweling skills, but you certainly weren't a lout before.
