Thank you for this. I did a previous repair and sealed the rack bolt holes and retaining clips but never knew I had to silicone the seam. So thanks again for this. Cheers

I will be tackling this job this weekend. I just bought an 07 FJ and have the same issue I suspect. Thanks for the great video. 👍

G’day from down under! How did you manage to spread the silicone so evenly? Im looking at using Sikaflex, however, it’s quite thick and not runny, so tricky to apply.

First, thanks for the video. Have the same issue. Second, how do I remove the strips? Are they just sitting there under the roof rack mounts? Glue? Will they bend or break? Do I pry them up? Are they metal? Thanks for any and all info!

im having the exact problem right now, i thought i fixed it like 10 times already, but this time i got fed up and removed the entire headliner. i also thought its from the bolt holes. ill have a look at the entire seam to check that like you were saying. i put some seam sealer on some of it already, but i may have todo the entire thing like you showed. any other advice you can offer?

yes make sure you clean the outer edge well... I used a wire brush wheel attached to my cordless drill.. use clear 100% silicone and allow it to dry 24hrs before full assembly

Did you use the same old molding or did you have to buy new molding? Was the molding easy to remove and how did you remove it? Thanks.
@dclarke2814

arcadebrat I used the same molding.. but I cleaned it as well... it doesn't seem to stop the water.. but more designed as a trim.... the "seam sealer" is what failed.. it's an adhesive/ gasket type materiel applied during manufacturing to bond the 2 pieces as well as male it water tight.. as u can clearly see pinch weld points up & dn the channel... my thought is over time the suns heat caused expansion & contraction which led to it's failure

What were your tell-tale clues it was leaking ? I have a dampness sometimes after it rains on the floor mat that I can't figure out where it is coming from.

I had watermarks on the headliner just above the A pillar. I'd say pull the kick panels & a pillars then look for dried watermarks.. if u cant find any. pull the seats out an have someone DRENCH the fj while u crawl around to find the water..... sounds silly but it works
@kealahau6727

Take care of it...mine was neglected by the previous owner,both A pillars are destroyed, the floors has been rusting fron inside the pillars the roof leak was folowing the seam and destroyed a foot of structure behind the airbags....a nigthmare....1 month later , getting closer to fixing it...prevention would have helped 😂

Silicone goes on the outside not the inside. if you seal it on the inside it will just work its way around it. Need to do it like a roof on a house with overlapping protection so the water always is directed out and away.
@dclarke2814

if you paid attention I did silicone the entire exterior drip rail after cleaning the area 1st. then I also sealed the interior edges.. Zero leaks since.. but thanks for the comment..
@Nomad8324

@@dclarke2814 I did but just trying to help anyone else who has the same problem. Because like at the beginning where you had siliconed around the inside of the roof bracket. If it was leaking there all that's going to do is push it several inches down the road and it'll leak there. So much easier to use the structure of the car and other items like a house.
@Nomad8324

@@dclarke2814 because from the top of the house to the bottom of the house everything is overlapping to keep the water going away from the inside of the house because as we all know there's lots of things in a house that will not tolerate water. I get it you didn't know any better but at the same time who else is going to watch your video and then slather silicone on the inside of their roof of their FJ thinking that it's helping.

something I left out.. let the silicone cure at least an hr before putting the drain rail covers back on.. after 1hr it will be dry to the touch. if possible let it cure 24hrs before exposure to water..
