I've had an fj40 since 1979, bought it new and still driving 450k later, (est- my odo broke years ago) . No engine, frame or differential woes. Been a lot of rough places. Think I will be buried in it.

I'm currently in the process of restoring a '70 FJ40, and I can tell you first hand it is built like a tank, far superior to any CJ. I also own a late model Jeep Grand Cherokee, and it is nothing like the FJ off-Road. The inline 6 is powerful and full of torque, has the drivetrain of a tank, enormous axles, I'm absolutely in love with the FJ40. In my opinion, it cannot be beat off road, the only vehicle that could get close is an all aluminum land rover defender. Otherwise, superior & beautiful.

I didn't see anyone stacking rocks for the FJ40, or did I miss that. FJ40's have 9.5-inch ring gears and their axles are half again as thick as Jeeps. More horsepower?? Maybe but what about torque?? This guy got his FJ's pumpkin seriously caught on a rock and should have backed off but he was just dragged off forward. That kind of abuse would have cause some serious damage to a Jeep. Where was this guys spotter to tell him it was a lost cause to go forward. As was said above, we buy FJ40's to wheel them, not just to look pretty. Notice where his snap strap is connected? The back. 'nuf said. Having said all that, FJ needs to tighten his power steering belt.

Most of these old Landcruisers are completely different vehicles then when they were new. My FJ-40 is half Toyota and have Chevy with a 5.7 engine and transmission out of a Chevrolet Camaro. The 5.7 LT-1 engine has 300 hp and weighs 250 lbs less then the original 2F at 149 HP. Plus ARB air lockers and 4:88 gears and reversing the leafsprings make it a completely different vehicle. The above vehicle even has coil springs in the front.

I disagree with this statement; yes lockers makes things easier off road but sometimes that isnt the point of "off roading" for fun! Lots of peeps like to comment about "lockers" "lockers" "lockers" Maybe they do want lockers! maybe more skillful challenge to conquer without...much more fun IMO

Not true, I can't show you the math, but I'm an Astrophysicist and I work at SAIC, you'll have to trust me. Toyota Land Cruisers and Hilux (a Land Cruiser with truck body) are the only vehicles to ever successfully drive to the North Pole. Countless other vehicles have tried, all with solid axles, all failed without even getting close. Older TLCs can't do way more than the new ones. The FJ Cruiser is the 1st TLC with IFS, it's also the 1st LC to run the Rubicon trail totally stock.

No it doesnt. It has WARN LOCKING HUBS. "Lockers" are locking differentials and not the same thing. Toyota DOES make lockers. They were available in NA starting in 1993 on the FZJ80. You can weld your differential and have a locked axle, but you dont want to drive that on pavement.
@cody93225

if a vehicle has lockers front and rear it will dominate any vehicle with open differentials. Lockers are the key to going far off road, it doesn't really matter what the make is.

I will say also, it's a sin to modify the FJ40 as heavily as this one. They're absolutely beautiful and reliable as they are, they belong in a museum. I have considered taller leafs and a shackle reversal for taller tires, but hesitate to do that. Essentially, if you ever have an opportunity to own an FJ40 in any condition, buy it immediately! you will not be disappointed. An absolute dream to drive, simple, easy to restore and repair, and built to last a lifetime of abuse.

ARB and stock Toyota E-locker and I also ran OX on the XJ those are all great... Detroit no good.

Those old cj40's are better. They came in diesel, thier longfields were as strong as dana 60's, and had more durable transfer cases. I suspect that the japanese at the time reverse engineered a jeep but beefed it up more, hence the resemblence.

@seventhSabra

Pretty soon all 4x4s will be IFS, the technology has gotten to the point that it's better than a solid front 99% of the time. Look at military vehicles, they're all independent suspension, all future concepts, etc. Look at ATVs, when they had solids they sucked, now they're all IS and far superior. The only case where a solid front is an advantage is super extreme rock crawling, and that accounts for a tiny portion of 4x4 activity. IFS can take 300K lbs force to a wheel, solid can't come close.

I have a 13 Rubicon and a 94 FJ80 fully locked for both. And love them both. But I don't know what kind of point the OP is trying to make. Is he really comparing a trailered full blown modded trail rig. To a daily driver Jeep? I think the only thing factory Toyota is the body. Definitely not the weak 3f engine in there. It is a bad ass 40. But I think a stock 40 would have a hard time hanging with my 13 Rubi on 35s.

Generally lockers are sold on a brand to brand basis i.e, Detroit, ARB, spidertrax. The locker brand certainly creates a difference in dependability and drivability. Are you saying that factory toyota lockers are better than aftermarket brands? Otherwise it just depends on the quality of the aftermarket locker. And I would still disagree that factory late model toyota lockers are better than ARB or Detroit

However, modern jeeps also have almost 2000lbs on those old fj40's so they arent exactly true offroaders. Offroading is about traction, articulation, maneuvering, and to a degree some power. Weight can negatively affect traction and articulation making power useless. A true offroader is built, and doesnt have power windows/locks/airbags/AC/cdplayer etc. Some boys here in the local jeep club have some mostly stock striped down rubis that could easily compete

Bet you ten bucks he is running Dana 35s..No point putting lockers on that, you're gonna end up snapping axles left right and center. Reason why jeeps rarely have lockers, you have to replace both axles before going locked..also limits the size of the wheels to 33s Why the fuck they decided to put an axle made of cheese on Wranglers and non fullsized cherokees? I don't know...reason why i probably won't ever buy one lol.
