What a great journey. I must admit I find the comments about not being able to play flamenco guitar, sing or dance - if you dong have pain - it isn't convincing. I work in mental health & can confirm pain is widespread. Losing housing, jobs, being insulted etc isn't just the authentic gypsy / gitanos. Theirs is a very sad story but others can identify. The Blues came into life because of pain & oppression. Celtic music too. But to play any of these, you have to understand and live them. Even classical guitar comes to life when the player puts their emotions into the piece. This is not a critiscm of yourself. I listened carefully to what you thought. I've listened to flamenco since the 70s and taken lessons. I'm familiar with the wars in flamenco, but it puts me off artists who are bitter. I hope you continue to grow in appreciation for this art form, which ever way you go.

Have seen this so much, later, yet the time has flown. Not a gypsy, not Spanish even, only white, but flamenco entered my heart 40 years ago and never left. Because it is of the heart if you are able to let it in. Where is this young man today? And all the other young people in the video? I hope that life has brought them good. And wether or no they can sing and dance with it, as everyone needs to do. Am so happy this was here, thank you!

I agree Tao, it is time to make another film...20 years have passed and the "scene" has changed a lot! Your documentary is a classic and an update through your eyes would be great. Tony Gatlif won't do it. you should.

I just don't feel connected to the flamenco scene anymore...thinking about other things now. This was a chapter...a long and meaningful one, but a chapter. Thanks for the kind words though. Very much appreciated. (I have many a bit more recent videos of Manuel Molina etc. at least:)

¡Gracias, Tao!

Amazing seeing a young "El Perla" talking so eloquently to you about his opinion on the contemporary guitar (He and I are the same age so this must have been filmed in the early 2000s), Manuel and the other lad in the car with you and El Perla come across as really top lads. Even today, his opinions havent changed over time. In the few interviews he's given, he always says that he's not interested in the current toque and doesn't want to teach. Thanks so much for this full version, Tao :)

Wonderful film @Tao Ruspoli - I started my flamenco journey just over a year ago, and this was inspirational. Interesting to see a young El Perla . I imagine you realize how important a document this is. As they say, this was another time. 👏👏👏

Same here, nostalic years. Brings back so many great memories for me, as I knew all these characters personally and still run into some of them to this day. I ended up staying here in Seville and dedicated my life to the flamenco guitar. Raul, Luis and Manuel came over to my flat many times back then... I recorded a lot but it's all on mini disc, no visuals. I wish I had thought of recording with a camera but I'm glad to see someone else did.
