Flaming Gorge Reservoir is famous for its kokanee salmon. Don Allphin continues to highlight examples of this fishery with a look at jigging for kokanee salmon using a small, spoon, a Tasmanian Devil in the 1/4-ounce size. Don shows how to drop down (watching his sonar) to the the school, just keeping the lure inside the top or shallowest edge of the schools, move the lure up about 2 to 3 feet, then let it free fall back into the school. The kokanee take the lure (generally) as it is falling.
Don then catches his three-fish limit using this method. Shot on April 10, 2020, Don targeted kokanee salmon from roughly 8:00 a.m until just after 10:00 a.m. The fish he catches are 17 to 18 inches in length and are most likely four-year class of kokanee. He uses Gary Dobyns' rods, Vicious monofilament line, and Quantum reels.
