In the 15th century, many musical chapels throughout Europe were headed by composers born and trained in the Franco-Flemish region. From these privileged positions, they spread a style based on polyphonic balance, simplification of rhythm and a careful development of imitative counterpoint. It is not by chance that contemporaries came to identify this sound ideal with the rebirth of music.
