Is it me or could Caiphas Cain be described as the exact synthesis of these characters? Has the insecurities of Hornblower but gets the hero status despite trying to run from danger(Flashman), and both basically have their motivation being the protection of their public image. Edit:I should've read the other comments first, no points for original thought here. But what does this say about our generation/your audience that this is the first example we all come to.
@javieraravena5345
Жыл бұрын
That the type of character those novels have are still relevant and well liked. Cain has the abilities and experiences of Flashman, but the inner self of Hornblower. He also adds a lot of self loathing too, since the editor of is memoirs remarks that as much as Cain claims to be a cowardly, uncaring asshole, an analysis of his actions pain a different picture, even is supposed "feinted heroism" doesn't explain them. One example IIRC is in one novel he shots and destroys an enemy tank that men from his unit were charging. Cain downplays it as him just faking heroism and saving meatshields for later, but the editor points out it doesn't make sense, since inmediatly after that the enemy discovers his position due to him disabling the tank and start to shoot Cain. If he was the coward he claimed to be, he would have let them die. But he saved them, showing that he actually cares, even if he doesn't like to admit it
