This is the stuff Roswell weather balloons are made of. 😂

Ok. You can make a car out of it! You take a 1957 Plymouth Fury or Belvedere or something similar (it should be red). Make all of the body panels out of it. Then connect this directly to leads of the radio. Car crashes anywhere. Turn the radio on - the car regains its initial shape. You have a Christine! Plus - your your car insurance goes down. Fender bender? Blast some " A-Knockin' ( )" on the car radio and you're golden. Love your car or suffer the consequences.

Maybe use it for robotics like a muscle Maybe using one with spring shape more reliable for this application

Cool idea, you mean like using it with a spring?

@KeonsLab yeah make it contract and relax like a muscle either by using it with spring or using two of these Search for "rubber band muscle model"

I might give something similar to that a shot actually, thanks for the input! This is why I love the youtube comments so much, I get to brainstorm with like-minded people!

Nitinol is uses often in medical devices and dentistry tools! Also commonly used as actuators since theu pack a crazy power to volume ratio. You get the most out of them when you train the alloy into some kind of coiled or folded up shape so that they can can be used to pull on things. You can pair them with a spring that unfolds/uncoils when no current is running through to get a repeatable motion

I’ve heard of untrained nitinol being used for things like dentistry tools before but I had no idea they actually used the trained versions as well!

Thermal regulation, like a refrigerator/cooler. Maybe combine two pieces with an insulator between them. One direction pulls this way, then when that action is done, the heat pulls it back the other way.

How much force is required to deform the material vs how much is generated by the resetting?

fasteners, use a flexible insulating strip down the middle to make it act like a wire so you can put both leads on the same side. ram though hole, apply charge, no fit through hole.

Really neat idea! That would make for one expensive fastener though!

Idea: A 3D printer build plate that when electrically stimulated will deform in a deterministic and programmable way with zoning. That way we can automate part-lift-off from the build plate :) Would be a fantastic product for 3D printer farms, as a huge challenge there is removing the part in an automated fashion.

That’s a super creative idea! So the printer bed would be flat when heated and then automatically deform when cooled? That’s a pretty cool concept, I’m just thinking that it might make bed-levelling more complicated since the nitinol is activated by heat
@wanderingzanzey2126

@@KeonsLab indeed, would have to level the bed while it's actively heated.

Can be used for electromechanical relays without the need for induction coil or thermostats

How much power is needed for this? Can it be done by a battery?
@KeonsLab

For the flat sheet, not many volts, but quite a decent amount of current to get a fast reaction (~4 to 8.5 Amps). A power supply with constant current control will always behave differently than an unprotected battery

So like a thermal switch right? I’m actually thinking of a way to try and make something like that for a future video!

Yeah I didn’t word that in the best way. The only reason I didn’t mention the transition temperature was to keep it simple
