I agree, we pay good money for records and they should arrive with mint discs. Not as glaring as warpage, or as common, but I’ve gotten quite a few new records with off-center spindle holes, which is even worse because that means the record is going to get premature groove damage the more you play it. You go to goodwill and pull out an ancient copy of Whipped cream and other delights and the disc is flat with a centered spindle hole.

When you make money cleaning and flattening vinyl you tell people their vinyl is dirty and warped. Perfection is now what everyone is seeking. Like having to tell someone a fifty year old record may have some hairlines or scuff marks on it! Like Mazzy, I had one issue this year (out of 127) and just took it back to the store and they replaced it.

Sorry, but that’s utter nonsense. I’ve been buying and collecting records for almost 50 years now, and have owned/ran my own record store since 2019. Yes, I offer cleaning and flattening services for customers, but I also clean and flatten, if necessary, all of the used records I sell. Maybe you don’t expect “perfection”, but if people are paying $30+ for a new record, it shouldn’t have issues, period. A shocking amount of new records have defects, if you’re willing to accept that, fine, but it’s a fairly recent phenomenon, to the degree I’m seeing it now. Sure a “50 year old record” may have scuffs and scratches, and they should be priced accordingly.

Ok it’s always fair to look for conflict of interest! That said I don’t think the cleaning and flattening is a significant part of his revenue stream and the cost of the set up is not small. Guys, the reason they are warped is that bloody shrink wrap! Stretching HEATED 'cling wrap' so tight. Double albums are the worst. If I buy 10 new pressings, 3 will be warped. That is why MOFI, Analogue Records, Rhino etc put their records in floppy perforated bag. It's that simple! Sending records overseas in the middle of summer, and if left in a courier van can also add to the issue but the shrink wrap is the main issue. Storing boxes of records flat (horizontal) in warehouses is also not good. They need to use the floppy bags, which would also cut down on the plastic waste. I use /keep the floppy bags on my MOFI etc records, I don't through out the floppy bags then put on a new outer sleeve! Who cares about outer sleeves, they are there to stop the rubbing against your collection.

Records have been “shrink wrapped” for decades. That’s not the problem. Maybe for vintage, poorly stored, still sealed records, but not new.

I buy/keep maybe 2-3 new LPs a month, for myself at my store. I'd say probably half are either bowl warped or have some kind of defect. QC is a huge problem at most plants. Luckily, at least for warped records, I invested in an ORB record flatening machine, which works quite well.

@@Doctore_Robert maybe what he defines as a warp, is an obviously wavy warp. I also include bowl shaped records as warps, as in the label is high in one orientation or the edge is high in the other.
