THANK YOU for this; it's the very information I've been seeking for years. We used to HAVE a real, mechanical unit...the tape reader, too. Back then (1978) getting a box to decode this stuff was like a moon landing, it was so high-tech. Now, my phone decodes it. Go figure. I've suffered medical problems including brain damage, so I probably will never transmit...but it's good to know I can at least receive. Thanks again!

last time I was on RTTY was in 1970s with a recevier and Model15 machine that go "chug-chug-chug." Next time when I'm at the club shack, they have a PC with FLDIGI, I will tune to some of these RTTY freq and see what I can get. I didn't know about aligning the lines in the waterfall, thanks for showing this.

Very good Demo. Are the 2 waterfalls for full duplex? Is there a typical expected distance in miles?

fldigi is pretty cool was using it just to decode CW but will try decoding RTTY next - easy enough to switch modes. This particular QSO between W9IKU WB5MXO is interesting because both have the first name "Guy", very unlikely. The chances of that happening at random is 1 in 11.111111 million! 99,258 "Guy's" in the U.S. / 330,858,686 people in the U.S. = 0.0003 Probability of two guys =p(GUY)*p(GUY)=0.00000009 1/0.00000009=11,111,111

Im just starting out learnig about the digital modes. I've decoded RTTY 45 but in between transmissions I just get random characters being printed to screen. Does anyone know why this is? Is it due to noise or something else? Thanks.
@OfficialSWLchannel

normal its the noise that generates this

@@OfficialSWLchannel, thanks. I'll see what I can do to reduce it. Im using the audio out that would normally go to a tape recorder and the volume isn't adjustible except for the input to the sound card. I can also try turning down the RF gain. Unfortunately im using an indoor long wire with no ATU at the moment.

Now this would be useful if you could pipe a text file in as input or indeed do the reverse and pipe received text out into a file.

Thank you for posting, but this doesn't show us how to do anything but to chose RTTY in the op menu and there, it works.... well.... how to hook to rig for example? What about the dozens of settings in the menus? IP address? and so forth.. need to have the INFO! How is the audio getting from the rig to the PC?

@@OfficialSWLchannel I use rtty evert time i am on the radio but does not seem many folks use it now i have had plenty of contacts on rtty but mostly when the contests are on at the weekends .When i look on the dx cluster sites its 99%ft8.

it's a question of keeping up the activity, problem is most people don't do it thinking no one every uses it ... FT8 is popular mostly cause when you don't have much power and a modest station, it is easier for DX but I hear many other modes regularly, just keep trying
@qmsarge

True. RTTY only becomes active during RTTY contests.😢
