One thing i love about Fleabag and Fleabag analysis is that they all connect, the show is very clear communicating, is just so well done, built, layered, that really makes you think that its been thought out to the sligthest details.

You are very much the first person I've seen online to have the courage and intelligence to recognize that judging these characters through a black and white lenses is not only counterproductive, going against everything the show is trying to say, it also just makes it for a much less interesting viewing experience, filtering all the nuances out. The show is quite literally about the crossroads of judgment and empathy, of loathing oneself and allowing oneself to love and be loved - and you captured that beautifully.

I agree. You have always been able to show the human sides of characters whether they are from animation or live action wonderfully. You’re able to show and explain the grey area and that these characters are far more then meets the eye.

an interesting tid-bit is that The Priest actually appears alongside the main characters of the show Normal People in a crossover spoof sketch for a charity during COVID. In it he leads an impromptu couples therapy session between the two by having them sing the song “Baby Can I Hold You”. By the end the two characters reconcile and The Priest is left alone singing the last line: “Maybe if I told you the right words at the right time, you’d be mine.” He leaves the confessional booth and looks up at the roof, towards God i’d reckon, and gives him an acknowledgment. To me, the Priest is not over Fleabag and even feels some sort of regret over his decision to not be with her, but he’s reassured by his decision since he helped Connell and Marianne through their inability to communicate with each other and by God. It’s a really spectacular short cause it’s meant to be a comedy skit but it still contains so much character for all three characters.

@@Octobris it isn’t directly said but it’s definitely implied. I left it out but when Connell first gets into the confessional booth, the Priest goes on a monologue about how being in love feels amazing but to him it’s like a test or a cosmic challenge on his soul and that something so great such as it couldn’t have been made by God, but by the devil. It’s played as a joke since he veers completely off of the point that Connell was trying to make but the message is still there. Priest was talking about his time with Fleabag.

4:10 i guess that's also why we never really meet boo, and we only get to know her through fleabag's flashbacks. not just bcos before boo's death, fleabag didn't need the crutch, but bcos she had someone to love or to receive her love, who saw her truly and loved her. and after she ruins her best friend, that's when we meet her. bcos she wants the audience to lie to her the way she's lying to us.

I don't think it's just as simple as him being weak. The Priest used to be someone with bad habits who only brought pain to himself and everyone around him, until he found a new purpose in the Church, a chance to be someone better than what he was. The Church is an essential part of whom he became and he fears (or knows) that leaving it would eventually put him on a path of self-destruction again, almost as if it's an addiction, and he knows that if that happens he will end up hurting the person he loves the most, Fleabag, and maybe even break her new hope on love and life. At the same time Fleabag knows this, understands this fear and knows that she has to let him go. She could have just pushed a bit more and he would choose her, because at the end you can clearly see he is torn, that he knows it's something that will hurt for a long time, so she could have pushed and he would have stayed. But she knows that could destroy him, that he fears becoming again who he was. Fleabag has started to love again and being able to let go of someone who gave her that feeling again (or ever) is very hard but she knows it's the best for him. That's what sad about the last moment, both of them make the decision to be apart in the hope that it will be better for the other, that that way there is some hope of future happiness in their live because the feeling will pass. It's a decision based on fear (mostly his, yes) but also on understanding each other completely to know that their love is not what the other needs even if it is what they want.

Why do you think that they don‘t need each other? Isn‘t it like that, that both are giving each other strength. I‘m really curious XD

This is an excellent analysis! I agree they parted because they knew that’s what’s best for both of them and it takes strength to walk away from what may be the greatest passion of your life.

I agree mostly. But - and its been a while since I watched it - idk if his relationship with rhe church is stemming only from the fear of becoming a bad person. I think he genuinely enjoys his work? He likes the vestments and bible study and thinking about God. I think the fear part might be in the fact that he seems to only think he can do these things as a priest, but there's beauty in his religiosity too, and I think its one of the things fleabag loves about him. The issue is that because he makes being a priest the only way that he can love God, he can't love fleabag without divorcing himself from God. And if its a choice between her and a relationship with God, God will obviously win out. Essentially, I don't think it's God that is the priest's crutch. I think its the priesthood. And I think its kind of funny that he makes Christianity into this narrow thing for himself, but to others - and to fleabag - he shows them that it can be this expansive, joyful thing. I think, maybe, as he rejects fleabag, he thinks he's choosing God, but hes actually rejecting a more expansive view of what his relationship with God could look like.

“That fox is God” 😢 I can totally relate to the priest wanting to be loved, but feels like undeserving of love, doesn’t want to hurt people, likes structure likes routine like what was told to how to live. Weak! I sometimes think if I were not a Christian I’d probably be a nun by now. But anyways this is great video. Thank you.

This is such a great show and I hate many people won’t watch it just bc they don’t like PWB as a person… I think it’s one of the funniest and most sad stories ever. I haven’t laughed at and felt such sadness for a person in anything else I can think of. And luckily it doesn’t overstay its welcome. I agree with your take, the priest totally led her on, used her, just as she was doing. Two broken people. I really enjoyed how he could hear her internal monologue tho. That was a strange and interesting thing. Also.. your voice is very relaxing and your takes are solid ❤ gg

When the priest was giving his speech, I thought that he had chosen god over fleabag, and that's why he said it'll pass. Now I see it's because he's scared of falling back into the dark life he had before the church, being with fleabag would mean leaving his new and secure life, and he's not brave enough to leave it for his true love 💔
