Just below the harbor entrance the Corps of Engineers used to be based on the east bank of the river. At the bend is where the Union gunboat Cincinnati was sunk by the water batteries. She was raised after the siege ended. The harbor was built up by pumping sand from the Mississippi River.

There used to be a railroad line that ran to the end of what is Desoto Island. A ferry transferred supplies from Texas to the Confederacy before Grant came down river from Memphis.

@@marktwained My paternal grandfather, as a young man lived at the confluence of the Yazoo River and Old River. He would row to work 6 days a weel to the Anderson Tully Sawmill. After his day's work he would row back up river to home. The flood of 1937 took that home away.

It does. At one time you could take the Green river and Barren river all the way to Bowling Green

I’m not sure as I haven’t seen sounder readings.. I was told, “enough in middle”. Boat didn’t act like it was too shallow. 🤷🏼♂️👍🏻
