This really was a once in a lifetime experience for us on so many levels ! We got so lucky with a late season calm wind and warm weather window and the fish were there in good numbers. We enjoyed and appreciated every minute. Thanks Derek!

I see the overtime sweatshirts…. I’m assuming you guys fish with Pat? You seem like you are dialed in. I gotta get in on this action. Goals.

We had a great time! Got lucky with a couple back to back really calm days late season and the albies we're still around in good numbers. We fished with a guide named Chuck of Sand People Fishing Adventures. Hope you get into them!

Hey guys, awesome video. I was wondering if I could pick your brains about Albie fishing with a fly rod. I'm completely new to saltwater fishing so I really don't know much. Thanks and just subscribed!

Sure thing. Happy to help if we can. General setup is a 9 wt fly rod, floating or intermediate fly line with plenty of backing and a decent reel with good drag. 9ft of straight 15 lb flurocarbon leader from fly line to fly will work. When you find the albies try your best not too get too excited. Making one or two good casts into the feeding fish is generally better than a lot of sloppy casts that are close but not really where you want it to be. Hope this helps? Oh ya .. for flies. Sandeel, peanut bunker or anchovie patterns work. Can't hurt to have a good supply of olive and tan epoxy surf candy flies. Somewhat of a go to fly pattern, generally speaking.

@@fliesandfins Thanks for the tip! What size hooks are you typically using? I've got a trip coming up in two weeks in the Wilmington area and am really wanting to get on some Albies. My cousin said to use a large leader in case mackerals hit it, but would that mess up my Albie fishing? Also, I will be using a stripping basket and two-handed stripping. This is a bit slower than stripping to the floor, but will I still be okay? As to flies, I will be using Albie holes, sand eels, surf candies, clousers, DC-12, Peanut bunkers and I have others, but I think these are the one's that most people recommend. Do I need to be wary of fly sizes? My biggest is a 3/0 and smallest will be a size 1. Is there a size you guys recommend? As to where to throw the fly. Do I target the middle, or cast to the perimeter. I am using an intermediate line (Rio Sharpshooter XP). Can I retrieve it immediately, or do I need to let it sink some? Any tips will be greatly appreciated. Also, do you guys do any Albie fishing from the surf in OBX. I love the OBX, and would love to do some from the surf if you guys can point me to some general areas and give me some general guidance. This is my goto fish that I want to land on my 9wt rod so any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

@@fliesandfins Also, colors recommendation if any. And what about flashiness, is that important?

@@vangmountain No problem. Haven't fished much down there. Do most of our albie fishing in the Northeast. Just this trip with Chuck of Sand People Fishing Adventures. Good guy and guide. Sounds like you got everything gear and fly wise. Great line too. No albie expert, but generally speaking, if you can get your fly into actively feeding fish on the surface strip immediately and a little faster maybe. If there are fish in the vicinity, blinding casting works good. Maybe let it sink a little more and vary the retrieve speed. Goo luck! Hope you get into them.

@@vangmountain White/olive seems to be pretty reliable. But variety can't hurt to have.
