I wonder why there are multiple variants of the same (somewhat niche) aircraft in development by multiple developers whilst others are neglected? I’d personally absolutely love to see a PBY Catalina or a Short Sunderland modelled well.

I wonder the same thing myself Andy. I can appreciate that these projects take time and that perhaps (for example) Flight Replicas was working on their P-40 before iniBuilds even announced theirs but 1) it's surprising that 3 devs all decided to go ahead and produce this somewhat "niche" aircraft and 2) unless your product is vastly superior to the one that came before it, surely you'd be better off stopping development and cutting your losses (as I can't imagine interest will be high for the product - the views on this video would seem to confirm my theory). As I say, unless A2A decide to bring their P-40 into the sim, I can't imagine anyone will be too enthused for another version of the aircraft. It's a shame that we keep seeing this doubling (tripling) up though, each duplicated airframe is logically another aircraft that we are missing out on (and I have my own long list of aircraft that I would like to see in the sim haha). Cheers and all the best! : )

Thank you very much sir, I'm glad you enjoyed it! : ) Yes, I think some of my disappointment came from high expectations, but it's still a shame that this wasn't *the* most comprehensive P-40 of the bunch. Enjoyable (so long as one doesn't try and land ha), but certainly not a "must have". I don't mind the odd bug on release, but I don't know how the fps issue was missed / allowed to slide. This isn't the first addon on which I have seen the issue present itself, but on the other product, the fps issue was fixed before release (like you, I was starting to worry that it was my system at fault, since MSFS has been a bit more stuttery of late anyway haha). Hopefully Flight Replicas will continue work on the P-40N. . . Cheers and all the best! : )

I also expected it to be a lot more comprehensive and had been looking forward to it, ever since the first preview pictures were released. I also had the FSX version of it. On a different note, are you planning to do videos on the Flying Flea by Rara-Avis Sims and Red Wings Farman Goliath? The Flea is the sort of thing I would love to take a look at if I had more free time (but sadly I do not), whereas I may take a look at the Goliath, if the chance presents itself (being a fan of the Vickers Vimy, the Goliath would act as a nice stand-in). I wasn’t bowled over by the Red Wing Connie, but the Goliath is looking fairly nice from the pics. No promises though, as I’m now backed up with aircraft that I’m looking to review XD Thanks again! : )
@vintagesimulations

@@IntotheBlueSimulations The fun part of the Flea is, that it has no conventional controls. You’ve only got a stick controlling the rudder and elevator (well, the whole front wing moves) and you’ve got no ailerons. Which makes it very unusual to fly and a lot of fun…and a bit wobbly on takeoff and landing 😅 If you should somehow find time for it, I can truly recommend it =) Yes, the Goliath is very Vimy-ish =) I haven’t got their Constellation yet, but from what I have seen the Goliaths visual model is far better. It still has a few bugs and a lot more features are planned for it, including new variants. But as it is I already find it very enjoyable with a ton of features =) I’m looking forward to your reviews and I understand if you won't find time for those two =)

The electric sounds for the manual fuel priming pump/plunger don't make sense either. Yes Ikova, I noticed that also. I figured at least with the primer, the sound fit somewhat better (it did sound electrical as you say, but could pass as a "bad" attempt at making a pump sound also haha). Something worth note: neither this one nor the inibuilds P-40F are even capable of achieving their correct takeoff power RPM of 3000, as per the POH. Some P-40Ns had something called "power control" and for aircraft with this system, takeoff RPM was indeed lower at 2350 - but in these aircraft the RPM lever was inop and "cannot be moved" (as per the manual) as the throttle was linked to the prop control unit instead, and this is explicitly noted. On P-40Ns without this system, 3000 was to be manually set with the RPM lever. The P-40F never had it in the first place. I forget if BR also made this mistake on their P-40B, it's been a while since I flew it. I get the impression that the aircraft was modelled using the figures from one with this system, but the system itself wasn't modelled.

Hi Rossmum, Thanks very much for the info. That's very interesting and it sounds as though you may well have hit the nail on the head! As you say, both the P-40F and the P-40N behave in the same way and it seems more than a little coincidental that both aircraft are hitting the 2,500 ish RPM range during the takeoff. If I had to choose only one, it probably be the Spitfire (for the aforementioned reason), but in terms of "fun to fly", if you want a more realistic flight model, the F6F is probably your best bet, if you want a challenge, then the FG-1D will make life difficult for you ; ) I hope that helps a litte. Just wondering about your comment regarding the flight model of this one compared with the other P-40s out there. You mentioned that it felt a bit lacking of character, but in your conclusion you said that you would still put it ahead of the Ini and the Big Radials model. Any insights on what it is that this one has, or what especially the BR model is lacking in comparison? So far I only own the Big Radials but I feel that the flight model in particular is quite nice. Certainly not something i'd describe as having no character. Now I can't attest to the realism, but in terms of fun, the Big Radials is quite great!

Hi CSM, I could probably have made myself clearer on that one. . . With regards to the flight model, I was actually only comparing between the iniBuilds version and the Flight Replicas version. I haven't flown the Big Radials version in some time, but I seem to recall with the exception of the takeoff / landing, the aircraft flew quite nicely. I would put the Flight Replicas flight model ahead of the iniBuilds version, but perhaps on a par with the Big Radials version (if memory serves me correctly). The Big Radials version is too crazy on takeoff / landing and the Flight Replicas version is too placid haha. With regards to the P-40N "lacking character", really I was referring to the sounds / engine behaviour / lack of any vibrations, smoke etc. There is still no perfect P-40 available for the sim, with each version having its own strengths / weaknesses. I gather the Big Radials P-40 will be getting an update at some point, so it will be interesting to see what that brings. . . I hope that clarifies things a little? All the best! : )

Hi Danko, Cheers, you're most welcome! Unfortunately, it has certainly become more common (though it isn't anything new per se). Flight simulation does seem to have followed the rest of the software industry, in as much as this sort of practice has progressively become more prevalent and finishing a product after release, now seems to have become an "acceptable" practice. I don't have an issue with early access per se, but the product needs to be priced accordingly (a 50% discount is fair in my opinion). It used to be that this sort of thing was only done by smaller devs, putting out complex products and often the project would fall by the wayside (a risk one should always be aware of), but around the days of FS2004 / FSX, certain devs started intentionally releasing unfinished products in multiple phases etc (CaptainSim was at the forefront of this "innovation" once again! XD ). Most of this sort of thing started happening as addons shifted from boxed products, to online downloads (for obvious reasons). As Zomgrei points out, it certainly isn't just an MSFS problem though. I hope that clarifies things a bit. All the best! : )

Not sure about the 3-point takeoff there. Doesn't seem very realistic + the V-1710 torque effect would be lethal at that speed. The Big Radials one is my fav for now, but I'd buy this if they (greatly) improve it as those late-model P-40s look cool.

Haha, indeed Roland; typically I actually try and force a 3-point takeoff in the sim (whilst not realistic, it tends to help a lot with MSFS' rather sub-par tailwheel ground handling), but this was one of the few times I wasn't looking to do so, as the aircraft was so placid on the ground - the liftoff rather caught me off guard XD All things considered, I think the iniBuilds version is my current favourite, but it's still not fantastic. I also jumped on this one after having bought the two earlier versions from Big Radials and IniBuilds in hope for the definitive MSFS P-40 (due to price tag). I have to say I'm really disappointed. Granted, exterior and interior modeling is really good and I specifically like the wide selection of liveries on offer. However, texturing is surprisingly low resolution on the outside and sounds are really bad. I like the engine sound (don't mind if it's from the P-51) but startup is not convincing. Paired with no sound at all from operating the canopy mechanism and no sound change with windows open or closed as well as totally wrong sounds for primer and cowling flaps, that's really bad. And the list goes on (mixture etc....). Finally, the dedicated airshow model with modern radio doesn't do anything on the aileron control once in the air. It's simply broken and can't be used! I thought Asobo is testing all submittals for the marketplace? Certainly not in this regard! And all that for a premium price. Ultimately, it's not bad and still fun to fly, but it could, no, should have been so much more.

Hi Scudrace, Yes, sadly the P-40N just doesn't live up to the standards that it ought to (given the price). I very much agree with all of your observations. I missed the airshow flight model issues and that's a bit laughable to be frank. Asobo does check the addons, but I think it's more with regards to the integrity of the files, making sure no malicious software is included with the download etc - clearly (given some of the addons that make it onto the Marketplace) quality control is not something they invest in too heavily XD The Flight Replicas P-40 has potential, but quite a lot of work is still needed before the addon justifies its price. . .
