Today we’re taking Flight Replicas new Spitfire MkIIa up for a short aerobatic display over Forwood Farm. It comes as part of the new Spitfire MkIa package.
The package includes four main variants, however all Spitfires included in the package are exact depictions, meaning, they include various field modifications or factory upgrades, like different mirrors, instruments and so on. In total the package includes 11 different Spitfires.
Flight Replicas modeled the Spitfire with factory drawings and the result shows, the visual model is so far the most authentic Spitfire depiction in any sim I’ve seen. The visual model is 100 % accurate and there are plenty of small details that are missing in other depictions. The paint schemes included are also very nicely and authentically done.
This is also the first time in MSFS that Flight Replicas did custom sounds, which are overall quite good, but could still use some work. There are a couple of looping and transition issues. But Flight Replicas have already noted that they will improve the sounds.
The flight model is quite good and it seems to perform to the numbers. It can’t compete with Flying Irons Mk.IX, which just feels more alive and complex, but it still flies very nicely.
Overall, the package is great. I think it is very fairly priced and as I’m a huge Spitfire fan I’m happy to see multiple variants in MSFS. If I remember correctly there were around 400 - 500 changes made to the Spitfire from the Mk.I to the Mk.V alone. Meaning the early Spitfire is very different to the MkIX we’ve already got in the sim. Flight Replicas one can’t compete with Flying Irons Mk.IX in terms of flight model, feel and systems complexity, however the visual model is more detailed and it’s still fun to fly.
I think it’s great that Flight Replicas is expanding the Spitfire range in MSFS and I’m already looking forward to their Mk.V and Seafire packages.
For this particular flight I chose one of my favorite Spitfires, the Mk.IIa called “The Borough of Lambeth”. As a kid I bought a model of this particular Spitfire in 1/18 scale, and I had it until one or two years ago when it was stolen alongside a few other models. It’s great to have at least a virtual version of it again. Besides aerobatics this video includes an authentic “You can teach monkeys to fly better than that”- landing…which was of course part of the plan…cough cough
Sorry for the long write up, I hope you’ll enjoy the video.
