Flip Pallot - 2015 IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame Inductee
American fishing legend Flip Pallot has been described by peers and fans alike as the total outdoorsman. Since his childhood, Flip has had a deep love for his “backyard” of the mysterious Everglades, Biscayne Bay and the Florida Keys. In the mid-1950s, he could most often be found with friends John Emery, Norman Duncan and Chico Fernandez, stalking the shores of the Bay and the banks of the Tamiami Trail Canal. After graduating from the University of Miami, Flip became a linguist for the U.S. Army which took him to the jungles of Panama. It was here from 1962-1967 that he got a glimpse of fishing in exotic destinations, offering a preview of his many adventures to come.
After being honorably discharged, Flip returned home to begin a career as a banker- a career that lasted “way too long” if you ask him! His weekend and evening guide service soon turned into a full time job that would last him for a dozen fun-filled years to come. Flip was in high demand as a fishing guide in the Florida Keys and Everglades. Life took a turn when Hurricane Andrew swept through South Florida in 1992. Flip and his wife, Diane, lost not only their home in Homestead, Florida, but also Flip’s skiff, airboat, truck, tackle and more. Flip was out of the guide business, but a move to Mims in Central Florida simply led to more adventures.
Flip soon began his third career- the production of outdoor television. Asked frequently to guest for national TV shows such as the American Sportsman and the Outdoor Life series, he soon started his first series- the Saltwater Angler- which aired for two years on TBS. Flip saw his efforts rewarded when he became the host of the critically acclaimed Walker’s Cay Chronicles for 15 seasons. Walker’s Cay Chronicles has been acclaimed by many as the most aesthetic fishing television show in history, especially in the fly fishing community. He has authored many articles in prominent fishing publications such as Salt Water Sportsman, Florida Sportsman and Fly Fishing in Saltwater. Flip has also authored Flip Pallots’ Mangroves, Memories and Magic and was featured in a two-disc DVD set with IGFA Hall of Famer Lefty Kreh titled All the Best: A Conversation with Flip & Lefty.
Flip Pallot has also had a tremendous influence on the fishing boat and tackle industries. In 1998, he co-founded Hell’s Bay Boatworks and has been instrumental in the design of several of their hulls. Hell’s Bay redefined what was possible in technical poling skiffs and has become the benchmark to which all other technical poling skiffs are now measured. Flip still serves in an advisory capacity with the current owners, Chris and Wendi Peterson. He has also been a consultant to many tackle companies including: Sage fly rods, G.Loomis fly rods, Temple Fork fly rods, Simms, Tibor fly reels, Costa sunglasses, Worldwide Angler and Offshore Angler. Today he’s involved in a new Outdoor Channel TV series Ford’s Fishing Frontier, and continues to dedicate the majority of his life to conservation, philanthropy and of course, fly-fishing. His contributions to the sport through education, communication, and tackle and boat innovation are innumerable. For his unparalleled passion for fishing, the IGFA celebrates Flip Pallot.
