Martin Mere was formed at the end of the last ice age, when water filled a depression in the glacial drift. The Martin Mere Wetland Centre is a wetland nature reserve managed by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. During the winter months, it is home to over a million waterfowl. Popular species include Pink Footed Geese, Barnacle Geese, Whooper Swan and Greylag Geese.
The Northern Lapwing is a common resident, found in abundance in the reserve.
