Thanks for sharing. Brings back memories i had with my Dad. He loved reptiles. Taught us girls not to be afraid of snakes. And how to identify them. Venomous & non venomous. Now all who know us girls call us to rehome snakes that show up on their properties. Thanks to Dad. He was a good teacher. Even got permission from the school to bring some to teach our classes about them. It was awesome. 😊

I always enjoy the amphibian heavy episodes. I also like that you show insects and arachnids and other things like fungus and flowers.... the woods being quiet means something was around... a predator of some kind... sometimes that is you... sometimes not. Glad to hear you take precautions when out there. Too many crazy weirdos who are not just harmlessly looking for herps in the woods...

It does increase a creepy feel whe to quiet when in the wilds, often a sign that a predator is about. In the home, when my kids were young, if it got quiet, often ment they were up to no good and time to check on them. The jump spider at the end was a really big and good looking guy, so cool.

Great stuff for the new year. I think amphibians are looked over and way underrated in herping. And for years me and my wife have always been worried about you being out in the middle of nowhere at times by yourself, but I always knew you probably carried self defense with you. It's good to know for sure though bro-ther. Stay safe and I'll catch you on the flip-side. Richard from Arkansas

We’re still about a month out from any activity at all. Snowed Tuesday for the first time in over a year, not typical for Southern New York. Based on previous years, peepers will start breeding around Mid-March, only need daytime highs in the 50s for that to start and nighttime temperatures above freezing for a stretch. Snakes start in April. Turtles are usually out around the same time as the peepers, the semi aquatic ones at least. Earliest I’ve ever seen Box Turtles is May. Locally, Box Turtles and Tiger Salamanders are protected species, so I appreciate from a distance. I’m also a fisherman, so I sometimes take a break to do a little herping when the bite slows down. Never done the nighttime herping off my own property, which has natural water source and is only 1/3 of an acre. People aren’t very friendly when you’re shining lights on their roads at night, I also live in the suburbs…so lots of people around at night to scare off wildlife. If you travel northward and would like some tips for herping in the suburban New York City area (Suffolk County to be more precise), let me know. I’d be happy to show you some prime habitat.

Lots of nice salamanders. Although herps always come first in my heart, after 65 years in the field, I find insects and arachnids more and more interesting as each decade passes. That jumping spider looked like Phidippus otiosus, a species with many color variations.

Definitely down for you to come to Western Maryland this year. Have extra beds and there's about 10 species to cross off your lifer list within about an hour or so drive. I have a buddy who has a property where mountain earthsnakes can be found (endangered species) and have a very good idea of where we can find some coal skinks, another endangered species.

Nice amphibian diversity and wood frogs. European Rana are much more flighty than those though. The beetle was probably from the genus Meloe. It is harmless if handled gently. Their defensive substance can’t be felt initially, only discoloration can be seen. You will notice blisters some hours later. Silent forests are a norm for that time of year in the latitude where I am living in northern Greece. Only owls can be heard. Sad for the dying opossums. They are always special mammals to me.

With my Muay Thai experience and krav maga training I don't worry too much about other people. Unless they have training themselves or a gun and can shoot me from some distance away MOST people who would attack me are not gonna win that fight. I can disarm people with a gun if they walk right up to me with it and unfortunately about 10 years ago I had to prove that when someone pulled a gun on me at a gas station. Once I took his gun he ran off. It was real but wasn't loaded. The police took the gun but I don't know if they found the guy. I had another incident while herping in the woods a few blocks from my house about 4 years ago where another guy attacked me. He tried to punch me but I blocked it and hit him directly in his solar plexis and immediately dropped him. He thought that just because he was bigger than me that he was just gonna rob me. He found out differently very quickly. Even with my training I'm still very careful because bad things could still happen to me or I could run into someone much younger than me with the same kind of training and get hurt or killed. Nobody is invincible.
