FYI, "that lovely little airbox" is mostly gone in the 2018+ J4500s. The buses now draw air from what looks like the same inlet, now just above the radiators, but under the floor hump? You might want to look into moving yours to gain some room ? The 2018+ Js have so much room back there that you can now get a rear window. FYI, your E4500 gains a couple feet of interior length because it has side mounted radiators, versus high mounted radiators like the 102s. The side mounted radiators were one of the big changes from the 102s to the E/J series.

The airbox info is great to know! Thanks! I will look into what it would take to move it. The way it is now is less than ideal.

Hey Andrew, did you guys end up removing your floor, or reattaching it somehow? Mine squeaks and I'm not sure how well insulated it is in my e4500. I didn't want to bother removing but I'm considering it...thoughts? And probably remove the floor rails. Also, I've thought of rerouting that intake directly down the side of bus, then across. I'd be adding one bend overall. Thoughts?

Our floor did not squeak, In the front half of the bus we put 3/4 inch subfloor over the existing floor. We held it down with 1 1/2 inch screws to the existing subfloor and used subfloor construction adhesive between the original and new floors. We also held it down with wood to steel screws along the walls and frame rails. We did not remove most of the seat tracks, we instead routed a 1/4 inch deep grove into the subfloor to allow room for the tracks. We did remove the tracks in the very front, and it was a bitch. I'm glad we didn't have to cut them all out. We will be flooring our back half any day now. being that we are living on our bus while we build it we are not doing things in the easiest order. I have not insulated the floors yet but plan on gluing 1 1/2 inch pink foamboard to the underside of the floor along the walls where I can access it from the bays and maybe filling the cold air return vents with insulation also, maybe I'll just stay where it's warm enough to not care. Time will tell. The diesel heater keeps the bus comfortable down into the 20's as-is and that's as cold as I like to see anyway. As for the intake I don't see where one extra bend will cause enough of a restriction to matter. On the new buses the air duct goes out below the window. That's something that I've thought of doing but the way it is now, works, so who knows. They also have electric fans that may give them more room in the left rear too. It's off topic but electric fans are on my wish list also, the mechanical one looks like a power robbing component that's bound to fail at some time. Thanks for watching!

What is in the silver wrapped duct in the back of the bus ? Edit: it is the air inlet ducting.

I have a question about the interior wiring in the overhead bins. How did you know what to leave? Thanks!

The only wires we left was the data cable that ran from the computer behind the drivers seat to the computer in the drivers side rear of the bus. All of the wiring for the lights, TVs, fans, and speakers were removed.

Hi, you mention getting hardware to allow you to open the windows. Have you tackled that yet? I’m just about to get started trying to get mine open. apologies if you’ve already answered this in another video! I have to watch more:)

Hi! This could get a little long, lol. We have 14 windows that you could potentially open. We opted to forget about opening the first two, due to the fact that they curve down and have a point that would be around head level when open. We didn't think one of those would feel good to walk into! We blocked out one window for the fridge; the one directly across from it and the one next to that have the kitchen cabinets and sink in front of them and are permanently closed. Two of the windows in the hallway and the one in the smaller bedroom have their original latches. The living area window and the four windows in our bedroom use the original latches as well, they're just a bit different than the emergency latches. Those windows weren't originally emergency windows, so they have bars that the windows are bolted to - we replaced the bolts with thumbscrews. It sounds like a lot, but it's really not, lol. When we park, we usually take 3 of the 4 thumbscrews out of each of the non-emergency windows so they are easy to open and close. The bathroom window is the only one we haven't figured out what to do with yet. We currently use screws. That window is partially (about 18 inches of it) behind a wall, but completely accessible from the bathroom in its current state. I hope that helps a little. Good luck on your build!

I just bought a '99 Van Hool T2045 to convert. It's got a Detroit 60 FWIW. Do you know anything about adapting the bus' DC/AC converter for use with outside current and solar? If I can tap into the electric systems already installed is seems like the best plan. Love your vid, the tear out phase.

Andy, thank you for these videos, a lot of useful information. I am looking to start this journey and the wife really likes the charter bus builds. I'm 6'3" and I'm looking at your headroom, how tall are you? I'm hoping to not need to do a roof raise.

I'm just shy of 5'11" our son is 6'1". I just had him stand in the hallway and he has a little over 2 inches between his head and the ceiling.

@@andyandnancy thank you, is that with a finished ceiling?
@andyandnancy

@@seandiezel501 finished insulation and furring strips are installed and he has a full 3 inches of room. The finished ceiling will take 1/4-3/8 of an inch of that space leaving him over 2 1/2 inches of space at the sides. He has 4 3/4 inches in the center to a finished ceiling.

Haha! We have our bed set up similar to that right now - I'm sure he'd appreciate that, but I'm starting to think it's funnier watching him try to climb off of the memory foam bed (a.k.a. quicksand) from the far side!
