Florent Schmitt: Trois rapsodies (1903-1904)
Robert and Gaby Casadesus (piano)
Columbia ML5259 (LP)
These three sophisticated national rapsodies come from 1903 and 1904. Born in Lorraine, Schmitt may have come by his cosmopolitan attitude of mind by the very contradiction between his name and his thoroughly French sympathies and training. At any rate, he here depicts rhapsodically three national spirits -- Française, Polonaise, and Viennoise -- with a wit that is thoroughly Gallic.
