I have heard turpentine is a good juice mango, very fibrous for eating but that it makes excellent juice. I would love to try any of these varieties!

I just had a K-3 ( Kathy ) the first one I had a week or so ago was a bit washed out, but today's was very flavorful, the acidic component was noticeable, variety is the spice of life they say, I enjoy the many combinations of flavors that mango varieties offer, no wonder us "mango nuts" are rarely content with just one variety growing in our yard. I tried the Taralay also today, reminded me a little of PPK, slight lemony taste to it, but had some other things going on as well, very good mango as well. I have one more Taralay, I am going to let that one ripen a bit more, to see how that affects the taste.

We had two Kathy at different times, both were good, flavor coming close to sweet tart or venus but lacking the 'zing' factor i call that sharp depth in tartness and then in another second the rise in sweetness that sweet tart had, mouth watering as i write. Taralay we just had one from a friend's home garden and it was mild in taste, probably picked early. In our tastings the mangoes that has been consistently very good this season have been Valcarrie and Pina colada.

Enjoy watching your honest opinion on tasting different mango varieties. I tasted Seacrest last year and really liked it so I bought a tree from the mango place Delray. Can’t wait for it to fruit. About rootstocks, I recently grafted a Keitt on to a Neelum seedling as an experiment. Do you think it could be a dwarf Keitt or maybe better disease resistant? Really like the late season of a Keitt even if it does have some bacteria black spot issues. Some years are bad some aren’t but the tree is such a reliable heavy producer anyways.

Thank you for watching. No harm trying different rootstocks, it is a lot of fun. Two years ago i planted 50 seeds of different varieties of mango that i got from Truly Tropical in Delray. They were all planted in the dense mucky soil that we have as our 1ft top soil. I did not want to plant them in perlite/vermiculite/sand mixture because that soil mix is not what the seedlings will eventually have as their permanent home. Out of the 50, only 5 varieties liked the soil and grew with good vigor. I remember Bolt, Mallika, Ugly Betty and forgot other two. Unfortunately they are not polyembryonic and i heard poly rootstock offers better fruit set in the scionstock. Neelum for me has been growing horizontally and looking like a semi-dwraf tree without any pruning. You could even try interstocking as a way to dwarf a tree. I will be experimenting with variety Amrapali , start with turpentine then graft Amrapali and then graft a known newer Zill variety. This way has been used in India to dwarf varieties like Dusheri and Langra.

Do you know why Turpentine is considered the best rootstock in Florida? What is it about the roots it produces, compared to any other mango?

It is chosen for the ability of its roots to absorb nutrients- Iron, Calcium etc in our alkaline Florida soil. Also for disease resistance and its growth vigor. It has been time tasted here. It may not be the best but it is the most reliable rootstock in FL right now.
