What a lovely video as usual: I so enjoy it that you stitch on very different & unusual things! I was so surprised too to see what you have done with Christmas Jewel🤩!! I love the colours & the fact that the threads were thrifted makes it even better for me🙂… It’s the sort of piece I would probably not pick… Until I saw your version of it, so thanks!

Hi Sheila. So nice to see your smiling face today 😀 Can’t wait to hear all about the retreat you are going to. That peppermint purple piece is looking great. Sorry to hear about your rib injury. It sounds painful. I own several Carolyn Manning patterns but haven’t done one yet. I really should start one soon. Your seasonal piece is really pretty. I agree that the fabric looks like mountains and water. It’s very different and lovely. HAPPY BIRTHDAY NEXT WEEK my dear friend 💗 The clown pattern makes me smile and the bird pattern is beautiful ! …and of course I stuck around 😉

Thank you so much Julie. You know how it is with old dogs. I felt bad after a while as every time she stood up I would take her out to see if she had to go to the bathroom. Poor old girl. We sort of made a good pair, two old gals. By the way I forgot to mention to you that I watch 24 hours in the A&E all the time. I think you mentioned it on your last flosstube.

Editing to add: BIRD Oh, soooo pretty! SQUIRREL!! I became totally distracted by your distinguishing between "pick" and "unpick" and the comparison to "thaw" and "dethaw." Both "pick" and "unpick" sound correct to me, so I had to investigate. Thaw is from the Germanic heritage of our modern English. "De-" is most properly used with our words that came from Latin, so while "defrost" is correct, "thaw" stands on its own, as you correctly noted. (The standard word defrost led people to follow that pattern to form the word dethaw, which is still considered not standard.) Pick comes from Old English and has many meanings, but we use it in its sense of "to remove in small pieces," so that's why "pick" sounds correct to our ears. (pick meat off of a bone) BUT, the etymology shown for "unpick" is fascinating (to me). There are two linguistic sources. (1) Middle English from Old English (the Germanic line), to pierce. (2) Then from early French (a romance language, aka the languages that evolved from Latin), there was piquer, "to prick." which first meant to to kill, pierce or wound with a pike ("a heavy spear with a very long shaft used by infantry especially in Europe from the Middle Ages to the 18th century"). One of the modern meanings of "unpick" is to take out stitches in sewing/embroidery/knitting. The first recorded use of unpick in this sense is from 1744. I'm sure it was used in spoken language in the British Isles long before it was captured in writing. Unpick has been used for hundreds of years and is also standard. People can say "pick out stitches" or "unpicking stitches" with equal confidence. I'm pretty sure I say both. That was FUN -- for me, anyway. Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming ....
