That was great Rob. I was taking pics of flowering currant flowers and lilac buds yesterday, with my em10 mk2 and zuiko 60mm macro lens. I haven't got an off camera flash but I'll have to get one now, after seeing the results you were getting with jpeg. You are inspiring, thanks.

Yes that would be interesting from the perspective of if you are losing anything from the switch, I have a D500 with some great glassy also I do not see M43 replacing that for my nature and BIF work, but who knows I do enjoy shooting with my EM-1.

Hi Rob - maybe I missed it, but when using an off camera flash with the inexpensive trigger, what flash settings do you use on the camera. I have an E-M5mkiii, sb 26 flash, and a $15 flash trigger. The trigger seems to be working, but the camera doesn't always send a flash signal. I've tried flash-manual, and either full or fill-in. I appreciate the help.
@RobTrek

Set the camera to fill flash. I have a one of those $15 triggers and it is not as reliable. Mine doesn't fire every time either. A great alternative I use is this one: amzn.to/31HvrWL Has a tiny transmitter and the receiver is a flash stand. Works great.

Hi Rob ! Brilliant video as usual! I have bought the same speedlite and radio trigger combo but cannot get it working properly... the radio trigger test fires the flash but my EM10 ii will not fire the radio transmitter. Are there menu settings that I am missing please? Cheers, Pat

Rob, Another fine video. As a supplement or expansion of this material, I would be grateful to see something having to do with Olympus Capture, for shooting tethered. I have taken to doing this in the past couple of months after I have cut my flowers and brought them indoors. Olympus makes it so much easier than other mfrs, because the software is free to download. Few, if any, folks have offered instructional videos on the subject, and so I am learning by trial and error(s). Thanks for your consideration.

Thanks. I've not tried tethering, but will look into it. I use my EM1.2 for video and not much else. I don't think my other cameras can tether. Which camera do you have?
@JoelTurrell
6 жыл бұрын
I use my EM1.2 and my EM5.2. I also use focus stacking with both, and tether to my MacBook Pro. My flashes are old - from the film days - and their voltages are dangerously high for digital cameras, so I use the supplied mini flash as the trigger. It has the advantage that the head swivels, so it's easier get the slaves to fire. Outdoors is a problem and the sunshine has sometimes triggered the slaves on the old Sunpak 522s.

You may want to consider some cheap wireless triggers like the ones I showed in this video. I did some tethering with my Nikon and Capture one, also with Lightroom. Great for what you're doing. I know others do portrait work on site to show the client instantly the pics. I'll explore tethering on my em1.2 and see if I can come up with a tutorial that makes sense.

Your list of equipment used in this video didn’t include the bracket that you use to mount your cell phone. Could you give a link to the bracket. Great video on using off camera flash & art bracketing.

It's a simple flash bracket I got on Amazon. search for "Lightdow Dual Flash Bracket Tripod Mount". I paid $6. I had to swap out the 1/4 screws for shorter ones to fit the cameras short female thread, and the phone is mounted to "Ulanzi Smartphone Filmmaker Grip", $10 on Amazon. Thanks!

Hi Rob, can you tell me the way to take nice portrait with firework? if i set low shutter speed the people will get blur. Thanks
@RobTrek
6 жыл бұрын
One way would be to make sure the people are in almost complete darkness, then fire a flash on them while the shutter stays open for the fireworks. After the flash fires, ask them to move out of the frame. Hope that helps. -Rob

Hi Rob, you’ve mentioned some of the cheaper flash optical trigger either too sensitivity or not sensitivity enough, how’s this JY-610 compare to Nikon SB-26 that you use? Would you recommend one over the other? Thanks for the tutorial.
@RobTrek

The 610 sucks! All the Nikons I have are awesome. SB-700, SB-800, SB-26. My Yongnuo (sold it last year) was also weak, but not as bad as the 610.

Didn't you have to turn the flash white balance off as in the previous video?

Good question, again! Since I was using a dumb trigger, the camera did not recognize the flash was firing, so did not adjust the white balance for flash.

I don't see why not. You'd just have to adjust the exposure compensation to +3 on the flash, then dial in -3 on the camera. Good question!

Yes. In this video, I want the flower to be properly illuminated, but all the other space underexposed by 3 stops. So you underexpose the entire scene by 3 stops, then illuminate the flower (using a snoot if necessary) with the flash. But the flash has to be set +3 stops to bring the flower back to proper illumination, leaving everything around it dark.
