I just loved Leigh Montville's column about this the next day in the Boston Globe. The two Boston College lineman discussed the bizarre, amazing thing that had happened on the floor of the Orange Bowl. They dealt with the metaphysics of the event. "That wasn't Gerard Phelan who caught that ball" big Mark MacDonald said. "God caught that ball." "No" big Jim Ostrowski said softly. "God threw it."

What a great ending to that game, and it stopped Miami from seeking a repeat championship. Remember, Flutie had a great start to that 1984 season but the Eagles began to leak oil and BC lost a couple of games near the end that might have cost Flutie the Heisman Trophy despite the great season he was having. But that "Hail Mary" which traveled 65 yards in the air and into Phelan's arms in the endzone is easily one of the great plays ever in college football, a play that many kids probably copied after the game outside if there was any daylight left. Not a fluke, but a "Flute". I'm glad I saw the entire game and see Miami denied.
@manuginobilisbaldspot424

No it didn't. Miami had blown the biggest lead in college football history the week before against Maryland. They were 8-3. The only team to really threaten BYU's national championship hopes was Washington and THEY COULD HAVE PLAYED BYU IN THE HOLIDAY BOWL! It would've been the defacto national championship game. But they took the money and played Oklahoma knowing that BYU was #1 and a win by them would clinch the title, schedule or not.

I remember watching this whole game, I was 23 at the time. You talk about a shootout literally, no defense in this game at all. One of the greatest college games that I ever saw. Unfortunately, this play seems to be the only part of the game that still exists or it seems like it. Gerald Phelan still gets credit for the catch. He still gets interviewed about that catch, even now. Him and Flutie were roommates at the time, so they probably talked about doing something like this to win a game.
