I have it on my 75 gallon with a sponge filter and I think it’s great. When it comes to canisters, I usually go about 3-5X the tank size in GPH. More towards 5X if I have large fishes (like an Oscar fish etc). Lower if for smaller fish that doesn’t like too much flow. My Mbunas prefers a medium flow, so it suits me well on my 75 gallon Mbuna tank.

Wanting to Switch out the 407 I have on my 55 gallon for a 307 instead and put the 407 as the 2nd canister for my 125 Gallon I'm setting up that has an FX6 already. The 407 is pretty strong in the 55 gallon and feel like it would be perfect on the 125 on the other end of the tank.

Nothing wrong with supplemental filtration.

Based on your videos was thinking of a 407 for a planted 40 breeder with smaller community fish. Do you think it'll be overkill in terms of flow? Is the flow adjustable at all? Thanks!

Should be fine, the flow is adjustable and you can use various things to help break up the flow

Hi, been using 307 for awhile now on a 50G tank.. Now that i use a pre filter sponge on the intake strainer, kind of feel that the blue pre filter sponge is now kind of unnecessary as all debris are now stuck to the pre filter intake sponge strainer. Would you think it's good idea to remove all together the pre filter in the cannister then to replace with 2 big bags of bio media as i feel the baskets for the bio media is not quite enough. Also don't understand why the blue sponge pre filter is placed vertically, is there a reason for it? Isn't it better if its placed horizontally to capture all passing debris? Saw some pretty big pieces of poop manage to get to the bio media initially before i place a sponge on the intake strainer.. Appreciate all advices, thanks in advance!!

I would actually keep both. the sponges will also form biological colonies as well as do better keeping debris out of media. The trick is to clean the pre-filter and have to mess with canister a bit less. This will also help the anaerobic bacteria develop as well. Now, I will say to be sure the flow rate does not drop. if you notice a flow rate drop even after cleaning the pre-filter, then it is time to also clean the interior sponges. As far as why they are vertical, I believe the idea is to force the water to flow across and through specifically for the bacterial growth. I believe that is why the bottom basket is also equiped with sponges. Really, you could probably play with foam density and eliminate the bottom sponge tray possibly but I have not tried that yet.

Hi, i know what the paper says, but do you think the 103 can run a 75G tank with only an arowana and a pleco? The little guy is just too cute to pass! Thanks and regards!
@716Flat4
2 жыл бұрын
a fluval 103 is good for about 10-20 gallons if memory serves. In my opinion, it is always better to over do filtration than to underdo it. Depending on circumstances, it is possible you can get by for a while, but I would expect tank conditions to deteriorate over time as well as the health of inhabitants. You could keep that filter attached and get another one. maybe add some sponge air filters...those things can greatly help. thanks for watching and good luck!

What size tank do you think the Fluval 307 covers from minimum to maximum litre/gallon? Would it do a 39 gallon tank with 3 goldfish in it? Would it be too powerful for a 27 gallon tank, or just right?
@716Flat4

I mean, 0 gallons to 40 gallons would be my range. I think both options you mentioned will be fine honestly. Goldfish are notoriously dirty, so maybe a backup filter would be a good idea as well.

it is quiet. all of my air pumps individually make more noise. I am sure that a very slight hum may exist, but I can not hear it over anything else that runs. my pc tower that I am using to respond to this message makes more noise. The only thing that does happen sometimes is it will spit air bubbles once in a blue moon, and when it does it makes a sound for about 5 seconds while it expels the air. Hope this answer helped.

75 gallon tank planted seachem flourite 407 fluval and a large sponge filter Do you recommend two 407 for a 75 gallon even planted?
@716Flat4
3 жыл бұрын
Long answer, That depends on how heavily planted. A few plants will do very little, but if it is heavily planted and you are not super overstocked, the 407 may well be more than enough. Keep in mind, the filters will absolutely do what they say they will, but not with the quality or amount of media that comes with it. The 407 has 3 double trays available for media...so it can chomp on ammonia and nitrites pretty well when filled with good media. The short answer is, I'd add a sponge filter or HOB or both to supplement filtration just in case but if you have the money to run dual 407s, I'd do that in a heartbeat. Thanks for watching.

@@716Flat4 thanks biohome, seachem and fluval biological standard sponges on bottom with some extra floss. Not heavy I'd say medium. One sponge filter. Maybe I'll add a second. Not a fan HOB.

My goodness, why can’t any of these darn videos be SPECIFIC about exactly what to put in each basket and show the order!! We newbies get nothing from these vague videos. Just the exact order, NOT “whatever you like”!

If you are looking for a more detailed breakdown, subscribe and stay tuned as I plan to release the 3rd video in my new tank setup series today or tomorrow, which covers filtration in depth. It will be a longer video, around 15-20 minutes, and will cover not only what filters come with, but ways to improve, cleaning tips etc. Thanks for watching.

@716Flat4

307 is enough...but the 407 is even better. You can not over filter, but at the end of the day, as long as you do regular maintenance, you will be fine saving a few bucks and going with the 307. I still always advise a sponge filter run with air, really helps keep water conditions more optimal and avoid weird films on surface. Thanks for watching!

So there are some things I like and dislike about every design. What I love about Fluval is the quality of manufacturing. To be perfectly honest I think as long as you have a quality brand canister filter you will be just fine. I do disagree with your friends though. Fluval has a lot of good things going for it that many others overlook like the corrugated tubing that triples the surface area allowing more bacteria to develop. Little things like that go a long way, but I have met people who do not like Fluval as well... And that is totally okay. This world would be a boring place if we all agreed on everything
