I wear knee pads at hot creek, always got to kneel. I fish dries downstream, nymphs up. Love the ranch!

Yeah, I think I maybe have had knee pads one year. Can't remember clearly and definitely haven't made it a habit. I didn't have too hard of a time of it this year. The kneeling is ok it's the crouching and getting up I can't hack. 😅😅

Tough fishing with such a huge snowpack and runoff has changed the river.

Yeah, definitely changed and frankly, I haven't fished it hard in a lot of years. That'll have to change next year. I'll have to focus one solid day on the Ranch.

never fished the ranch, only around the geo site. Glad you're able to still get out and get a line wet with this rough winter we had. Thanks for taking us along. looking forward to the backcountry vlogs

Right on Jim. Early season this year is tough on so many of our streams. EW North of you isn’t even fishable yet. Always wondered you have an old bamboo glass rod? Tight lines my friend.

Honest question, can someone please explain the Hot Creek Ranch website’s “dry fly” only reasoning? Is it an environmental issue, tradition or something else? What’s the reasoning?
@highcountrychronicles
Жыл бұрын
I can't speak for them but Dry Fly fishing in general is traditionally considered the pinnacle / most challenging type of fly fishing. Spring creeks usually have prolific hatches where fish (large fish) are actively feeding on the surface during that time so there are more opportunities to catch fish on dry flies than say on other streams. Plus the creek is pretty shallow, meaning that the fish will readily come up for a dry fly if presented correctly. Hence, no need to fish wets / nymphs if you've got the adequate skill level. Back in the day, before the turn of this century, Hot Creek was said to have 11K per mile! Yep. That's right. Based on electro survey data. 10 years ago or so that number dropped to 4K. I don't know what the current count is believed to be but it's low enough that fish have been stocked in the creek. So, in short, you come to Hot Creek for the challenge of catching 20 inches fish on a dry fly. Which, 15 years ago, you had a good chance of doing this time of year... Hot Creek is WAY over fished. Literally every fish there knows what a hook is because it is only a few hundred of yards of water.
@highcountrychronicles
Жыл бұрын
Yeah. I wouldn't doubt it but Gary LaFontaine did experiments where he concluded that fish look for positives. Positives indicators of a food source. Not negatives. If true, it explains why we still catch them, despite the pressure.
