Hi Chris, well fished. It seems the rivers this year are carrying more colour. Even the Hampshire Avon,which I fished last week was slightly coloured and that's a chalk stream. Evenings are really chilly, it doesn't feel like early summer. I am on holiday in Greece next week, I hope it warms up when I return.

Normally, I'd be out until sunset at this time of year, Paul, but I'm not sure it would be worth it in these temps?

Lovely video Chris….whetted my appetite as I’m fishing the Lyd in Lifton next week. It’s about the same size and very pretty ….ill be conscious about using smaller flies when I get there!

Many thanks, there might still be some Mayfly about as everything seems a bit later this year. I hope the weather plays ball for you and the levels are good. We've been flooded off a fair bit this season, but i think next week looks promising. Chance of a Grayling on the Lyd as well, which I expect you already know. Have a great week. (Take a few Whickhams for the faster water when all else fails) 👍

Yes, it's a really slow season for all of nature, it appears. May is normally the best month for our rivers, but it seems to have passed me by in a flash.

Hello Chris. Perfect video again! I managed to get on the Yeo at DB last Friday for a couple of hours. Caught three in a couple of hours. So have my first fish from the clubs rivers… Had some lovely browns from the river dove all on Mayfly on my trip

Excellent Paul, could I ask how clear the water was at DB? We did a bit of bank clearing there on Thursday evening, and the river didn't look too clever.

Actually (losing track of days) I went Thursday morning. TBH it’s the first time I’ve fished it so not sure how clear it gets. I’ve just been for a couple of hours, 1-3 and it was certainly browner than last week?! Caught one, saw a couple of rises that was all

Howard was not impressed. He took some pictures and is going to investigate. The Yeo always carries a bit of colour but not as much as that! Let me know when you want an evening on one of our beats.

Well done Chris at least you didn,t blank as I did last Frday , it was cold all week and cool NW wind so when I got to the rivers I was amazed at how low water was as well so 45min on each river felt well chilled so thought sod this it's meant to be enjoyable, this weather pattern due to continue next week as well so decided to leave it for now until things improve.

Yes Mike, we have it cold for next week also. Normally, in June, I like to fish some evening right into darkness to take advantage of the long daylight hours. I'm not sure there'd be much point, but I might go and try a bit of nymphing. Everyone I speak to in the club is saying it's a difficult season.

Couple of nice fish amongst the tough going Chris, some laughter too, always a good thing! I had a few fish today chase my mayfly pattern as I was reeling in, eventually a size 18 Klinkhammer saved me from another blank. Looked like you had fun 👍

Hi Davie, I should have switched to a smaller pattern, but I'm stubborn. Sometimes, pulling a Mayfly even underwater can work. I'll often have a few drifts over a fish, and if nothing happens, I'll twitch the fly, which often brings a response.

The little ones are good fun! You got a decent one too. Do you ever eat a catch?... If so, we the public demand a catch n cook. Cheers Chris.

Years ago, I used to keep a few, lovely for breakfast with some bread and butter. Now I return them all as they're too precious to only catch once. We used to get really good runs of Seatrout in the south-west, which would re populate our streams. Now they are in decline too. You also have the sewage issue, not all that appetising a thought!

Hi Chris, for my small stream dry fly fishing i do up in Scotlands little burns I’ve been using standard tapered leaders roughly 7.5-9ft and some 7x tippet when it’s getting short. Would furled leaders make a difference I do struggle with drag quite often, and what length? I’ve seen them down to 3ft! I could maybe use one of them then 4ft of tippet attached? I use a 6ft 3wt rod and sometimes a longer leader is unmanageable in tight spaces 👍 once again a great watch, will you manage to get up on that high moorland stream this summer? Thanks 😊
@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724

Hi Mikey, I would definitely give a furled leader a try 👍 I use a 5 foot version for all my dry fly fishing as the shorter ones don't have the same anti drag benefits imo. I have a 6'6" 2 weight for the Dartmoor stream, and a 5' furled leader works perfectly. Things of note, you must treat it with a paste type floatant each time before fishing whilst it's still dry. Nothing causes more missed takes than a leader that is sinking. The fliatant also gives the leader a bit of mass to help with casting. The leader will have a magnetic attraction to the rod tip, which will drive you mad😃 I think you'll be surprised at how well they cast and present the fly. I have been on the Dartmoor stream once this season kzitem.info/news/bejne/uq6J0nuZq4OSe3Ysi=lAbCNYvQsi6NJoFn

Wondeful. Are there occasional signs of "a biggie" a la Jack Hargreaves days 😉?
@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724

Jack Hargreaves👍 that brings back some memories. My dad always watched "out of town" and "old country." There are some bigger fish in our rivers, but they seldom rise to the fly. You need something substantial like Mayfly or daddy long legs to bring them up. Maybe I should spend more time fishing a streamer, but it's not really my bag.

My local rivers are just dead. Ive never known it to be this bad. Blank is the norm. They just dont seem to clear and virtually nothing seen feeding. I went out yesterday for full afternoon and tried a streamer. The only fish i saw rise after mile of walking i cast to it with streamer and hooked. It was 8 inches but saved a blank. Not even a bite or visible follow the rest of the time! I will stick to the Dee and lake fishing from now on. PS social media awash with people going out and catching big wild trout and then saying it was a tough day.......makes me feel like so inadequate and selling my gear and taking up golf!
