Hey...this is very timely! Thanks. I'm on Vancouver Island and we fish a lot of rivers this size. I have two Sage VXP 7 weights - a 13'3" spey and a 9 foot single hander that I use on the beach in the salt. I was thinking I'd have to get a switch rod to fish tight rivers to compliment my spey rod, but I'm going to save my money and use the single hander instead. This has confirmed that the MAX Short is the way to go for me, and I get to use my lovely single hander more often.

After teaching me to tie intruders on tubes, April Vokey told me that I could swing them on my single-handed six-weight rod. That very same week I had my best night on the Grand River catching bass on swung flies with a Royal Wulff triangle taper. When others are nymphing or dry fly fishing with limited success, I've landed nice browns on large muddler patterns. When bass fishing there's no better way to get big deer hair patterns out in the column: both on top and under sink tips. It's difficult to go back to more "traditional" single-handed presentations (i.e. upstream, dead-drift, etc.)

I thought you meant a 6 ips rating but I never heard of a commercial MOW tip rated by sink rate. You made it yourself out of a type 6 shooting head. Got it!

Skagitmaster, what a great video! This video makes my want to start swinging heavy flies on my single hand 6wt. Keep making videos, you have a new subscriber!

I use similar setup for trout fishing with streamers, but on a switch rod

I use a 30lb mono running line. I also like a floating running line if I'm wading because the floating running line does't sink and tangle so badly.

So is the head floating and then you’re running a sinking tip off that? Really want to figure out this setup. A lot of the places I fish look exactly like that water you’re fishing.

Sorry for the delay. Yes. An 18 foot skagit head with a light type 6-8 sink tip. In this case I cut one from a section of SA type 6, 8 weight shooting head. Old line. You can buy balanced tips for trout spey lines at www.finandfire.com/

Skagitmaster: You said you're using a ten foot #6 sink tip. Is that a T-8?
@Skagitmaster

Type 6 is a sink rating. About 6" per second. T-8 is 8 grains per foot. T-8 can be type 6. I cut the type 6 sink tip material from a type 6 30' shooting head rated at 8 wt.

Skagitmaster: do you know the weight in grains of the 10 ft. sink tip you use with the Rio Max Short 250 gr.? I want to try this, but don´t know wich RIO 10FT INTOUCH REPLACEMENT TIPS I can use. Thanks.

The 10 ft RIO INTOUCH tips are for spey rods I believe. I don't know the weight of the tip, but one could divide the AFTMA line size 8 (210grains) by 3 and get close (30'/3). That would make the tip I was using about 70 grains.

looks awesome, don't get me wrong. but doesn't all that thrashing of the water spook the fish?

it doesn't because you don't always need waterborne cast in small river. If it is really small stream , it's enough to do roll cast from the bank to reach opposite bank. Biggest challenge for me is not casting itself but avoidance of wading, because wading in small stream causes a lot of disturbance. I try to fish from the bank without stepping to the water where its possible.

A snake roll on a 3 or 4 weight would have made the far bank, and without all ripping of the surface from a sustained anchor, with every fish heading for the next county. I appreciate the advantages of a heavier shooting head for bigger wind resistant/ heavier heads in appropriate situations, but suggest that was well over gunned, even as an example.

The point of the video was to show the NON two handed casters that effectively using a short skagit style line on a a single hander does NOT require them to learn new casting strokes. A roll cast is all they need. A snake roll is a spey cast, not often used by anglers not familiar with spey casts. Thanks for watching.

So we're supposed to attach a Skagit head to what kind of running line? Does the running line matter much? I've got a 7 weight 9' rod I like to use for streamers and Clousers when targeting smallies.

Back in day we made our own shooting heads. It’s not something new.
