Fly fishing is the most fun thing I've gotten into in the last few years. As a lifelong conventional fisherman, I've gotten to the point of fly fishing 98% of the time. It's honestly addictive. Living down in Florida I fish the salt often but on days when I want to get out and just have easy fun, I hit the lakes and look for panfish and bass.

Try a tapered leader about 7 feet long... 8 to10 pound test. To the end tye on a couple feet of 6# test mono as a tippet. For fly line... defiantly go with a Weight Forward, Floating line. I like a 3 to 5 weight rod for fish up to 3 pounds. YES to using a heavier line than recommended... easier to cast... Try pointing your fly rod right at the fly and "stripping in the line" to give the fly some action. That way you don't have any belly, or slack in your fly line and you can set the hook with a swift strip of the line with your left hand... also, if the fish misses... with a "strip set of the hook" your fly will still be in the same area so the fish can have a second go at it. Great video... you are having fun and that's what it's all about. FISH ON!

I absolutely love fly fishing for panfish from my kayak. I spent the better part of last year doing it. I can’t wait for the weather to warm up again.

I am no fly pro but I am gonna give advice anyway lol. When putting the rod together, feed the fly line through the guides, not the leader. Then when the fly line passes the last guide pull the leader through. It is faster and easier.

I've never tried to fly fish or desired to... until now. After watching you catch those with your own hand crafted lure, i was amazed. It's obvious you have done this type of casting for a long time. Enjoyed the video ! Praying that you will feel better soon. Randy. B

You have inspired me to try and fly fish in stillwater again. My heart went out to you as soon as you talked about your fly fishing gear getting stolen out of your vehicle. In a preventative step, I took everything of value out of our vehicle precisely for the same reason. It’s really sad that society has gotten to that point. Tight lines. 🙂

Why on earth do people who complain about the scarcity of fish in our lakes target spawning fish on their beds??? It’s bad enough to interfere with the reproduction cycle when you are fishing catch and release, but when you’re keeping the largest, most mature fish to eat, you are depleting the gene pool of bigger fish and removing from the reproduction cycle those that are best able to take care of their eggs and fry. Since not all fish spawn at the same time, there always should be some type of fish available to catch that you are not pulling away from their spawning beds. Catch those and let other fish varieties reproduce in peace if you want to see healthy numbers of fish in our waters. Stop thinking, like an industrial manager, who cares only for that quarter’s short-term profits, to hell with pollution and the environment. Instead, start thinking ahead to preserving, our waters for decades and generations further down the road. We are already facing a difficult enough time with global warming, let’s not shoot ourselves in the proverbial foot. Otherwise, it was a good video, and certainly has got me itching to try out my new flyrod I bought off eBay, which, incidentally, is also a TFO rod.
