What's up fly-fishing world? My name is Makani Christensen, and I am a fly-fishing guide and Captain in Honolulu Hawaii. For many years I used the pre-made, tapered leaders by Scientific Angler. As my fly-fishing improved, I moved to using leaders that are stronger and better for landing bonefish in Hawaii. We got big bonefish! I found that tying your own leaders is cheaper and it is stronger. We got reef and we got fish that will take you 100-200 yards into the backing. We got fish with so much fight, that the drag on the reel is not enough to stop them. So having the right leader and tying it correctly is critical!
There are two different leader set ups that I use.
1. Seaguar Flurocarbon combination lengths: 30lb x 5 feet, 20lb x 4 feet, and 15lb x 3 feet, which gives you a total of 12 feet of main leader line.
2. Andy Mono and Seagaur Flurocarbon combo: 40lb Andy Mono x 5 feet, 30lb fluorocarbon x 4 feet, 20lb fluorocarbon x 3 feet. A total of 12 feet of main leader line.
You can also use all fluorocarbon or combination of fluorocarbon and mono for each set up. It really is up to you. The mono on helps you not cut into the line.
