Hey, I’m a 16 year old fly tier from Montana and have been tying flies since I was 8. I have just recently started taking it seriously and I am thankful for you videos. They have helped me so much over the last couple months. Thank you so much.

Great information as always. Thanks Brian! I was an electrician for 35 years, started tying a few years ago, when local fly shop showed me bead-chain eyes, I had to laugh, I knew All those light fixture “pull chains” I saved would come into use..just had no idea at the time it would be for flies! 😂 Have a good one and thanks again! 👍👍🎣

Brian, off topic but I think you have one of the best backgrounds of any of us KZitem fly tiers. The dinosaur and lightning bolt? I need to up my game! Oh yeah, great video by the way. I loved the tip on how the placement of the eyes, and how forward or aft can really affect the jigging action. (PS: I'm not commenting to win any flies-- the last thing I need is more flies around here. :-) )

Hey great video. The best tip I ever had for ever had was Bob Clouser ties in a small thread bump places the eyes behind it and wraps the usual way. Figure eight then under the in top of the hook. Tightens it up so nice. Once again thanks for all your info and videos.

Great tips on tying in the eyes. One more reason to stay away from gel spun on lead eyes is that when pulled tight the gel spun can and will slice through the lead eyes. This won't happen with other eye materials bit I've had it happen a ton with lead eyes.

Interesting comment about not using GSP. I use Nano Silk but it is similar to GSP. I'll try with something else. Thanks.
@flyfishingtheozarks
2 жыл бұрын
The thing about GSP is that it is REALLY unforgiving. If you don't have perfect, constant pressure, you will 100% get twist. If you have a thread that has some stretch, you can wrap a few times and stretch, then you know the last 3 or 4 turns are tight.

I'm guessing you'll probably address this in your next video, but I'm wondering about your last comment regarding thread selection; you recommend not using Gel Spun Thread for tying in your eyes, however a lot of the videos I've seen about spinning/stacking hair recommends GSP; if you're planning on doing a spun/stacked head on top of DB eyes, would you switch threads, or not use the "preferred" thread for one of the two applications?
@flyfishingtheozarks

Great question. If I am tying a Dungeon, I am definitely going to switch thread before tying the deer hair head.

Great video. I have been checking out some other videos on tying rabbit fur leeches with dumbbell eyes. I see tiers tying in dumbbell eyes on the top of the shank and then they tie in a zonker strip tail also on the top of the shank (hide side toward the point). I don’t understand why they do that, wouldn’t that cause the hide of the zonker strip to face up when the fly flips to hook point up with the fur on the bottom? Do you know what I mean? Thanks for any comments on his!
@flyfishingtheozarks
Жыл бұрын
Agreed, it will flip the fly over with the hide facing up. 99% of the time with dumbell eyes and zonkers I would say the hide needs pierced by the hook point and tied down toward the head so the fur shows.

Great video. If I wanted something like a Flatliner with a jigging motion, could I use a small dumbbell eye tied in on the side or would that impair the action?
@jameskerr2046
2 жыл бұрын
If you wanted the fly to maintain that horizontal profile I'd personally use something like a hidden cone head under the front marabou wings to get a jigging action. Adding lead eyes to that horizontal profile would probably make the fly fish on its side (so vertically for that pattern)

For me the placement of the dumbell eye is dependent upon the amount of material that will end up in front of the eye and how you want the head to look. Sometimes the dumbell eye is 1/3 of the way toward the back of the hook. You don't want to crowd the front of the hook.
