Your doing an amazing job, building a longrange vertical starting and landing airplane, that can indeed to a degree replace cars while keeping the maintenance cost low. I am following the scene for a long time, designing some prototypes on CAD at the beginning myself, with quite a bit of studying. With your design your just hitting the nail! Better than most others in the scene. It would be nice for you to consider a LiquidPiston engine with generator to charge the battery while flying. Keep on leading the technologie and please keep in mind to make it affordable to private buyers.

Hydrogen as a power source for electric vehicles (EVs) has been a topic of debate. While some argue it has potential, there are several reasons why it's considered less practical compared to battery electric vehicles (BEVs): Energy Efficiency: Production: Producing hydrogen is energy-intensive. Electrolysis, the process of splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen, requires a significant amount of electricity. This electricity often comes from non-renewable sources, reducing overall efficiency. Conversion: In a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCV), hydrogen is converted back to electricity to power the motor. This process is less efficient than using electricity directly from a battery. Storage and Transport: Hydrogen needs to be stored at high pressures or low temperatures, both of which require additional energy. Transporting hydrogen also involves energy losses. Infrastructure: Lack of Refueling Stations: The infrastructure for hydrogen refueling is sparse compared to the rapidly growing network of electric charging stations. Building a comprehensive hydrogen refueling network would require substantial investment. Complexity: Hydrogen refueling stations are more complex and expensive to build and maintain than electric charging stations. Cost: Production Costs: Hydrogen production is expensive, especially when produced using renewable energy sources. Fuel Cells: The technology for hydrogen fuel cells is still costly, making FCVs more expensive than BEVs. Safety Concerns: Flammability: Hydrogen is highly flammable and requires stringent safety measures during production, storage, and transport. Leakage: Hydrogen molecules are small and can easily leak, posing additional safety risks. Environmental Impact: Source of Hydrogen: Most hydrogen is currently produced from natural gas through a process called steam methane reforming, which emits CO2. Green hydrogen, produced from renewable sources, is more sustainable but also more expensive. Technological Advancements in BEVs: Battery Improvements: Advances in battery technology have led to longer ranges, faster charging times, and lower costs, making BEVs more attractive. Integration with Renewables: BEVs can be more easily integrated with renewable energy sources, further reducing their environmental impact. While hydrogen has potential in certain applications, such as heavy-duty transport or industries where battery solutions are less feasible, it faces significant challenges in the passenger vehicle market compared to BEVs.
@sethv9039
Ай бұрын
Current BEV vtols don't have half this range. Normal aircraft powerplants have to produce 80% power at cruise whereas a car only needs 20% at cruise... It's clear to me, the power demands of flight are far greater than those placed on ground vehicles. Moreover, all aircraft must have a reserve when they land- typically 45 minutes reserve. Flying longer legs commercially demands more than a bev aircraft can safely deliver so hydrogen helps.

@Muonium1
Ай бұрын
Note that 0:10 virtually the ENTIRE usable volume of the fuselage is occupied by the huge deeply cryogenic liquid hydrogen tank and associated ancillary fuel cell and electrical conversion equipment, necessitating total remote control of the vehicle. It's a fun experiment, but I'm unconvinced this is the future of aviation in any significant form; the immense energy density of hydrocarbon fuels is still just too good to beat, by far. Fischer-Tropsch driven gas to liquids processes for net zero carbon emissions has to be the way to go for future sustainable aviation.
@BayAreaMotorcycleCommuting
Ай бұрын
Gotta start somewhere. Very few technologies were in their finished, practical form at the time of their very first technology demonstration
@Muonium1
Ай бұрын
@@BayAreaMotorcycleCommuting The problem here is more fundamental than one of mere technological refinement. Energy density of fuel is a hard limit on every desirable aspect of an aircraft. Electric motors and prop design are effectively already at their maximum efficiency limits, there's no more significant room to improve there, your only option left to alter is in the fuel energy density. Conversion from the chemical potential energy of hydrogen into electricity is abysmal (forget even the horrible efficiency of electrolysis to get the hydrogen in the first place). It makes no sense to do that conversion on board the aircraft. OFFLOAD the conversion inefficiency to the ground, where high energy density hydrocarbons can be synthesized in arbitrarily large amounts, then burn it as usual in the vast existing infrastructure of 40% efficient jet engines that already exist.
@BayAreaMotorcycleCommuting
Ай бұрын
@@Muonium1 So is it your opinion that Joby and its investors have sunk millions into this tech demonstration purely for marketing and PR purposes? Or is it perhaps that they’re targeting a specific short-range air taxi market where clean vehicle emissions and low-noise operation take precedence over maximizing fuel energy density and long range flight, and that R&D experiments like this one will help them innovate to achieve that goal?
@Muonium1
Ай бұрын
