Crazy weather? In this video, we separate fact from fiction about what Oklahoma's weather is really like (and no, we don't have cows flying around in our tornados here - despite what Hollywood leads you to believe!). Many folks thinking about moving to Oklahoma may be hesitating, due in large part to all the stories they've heard about the weather we experience in Sooner State. So, to help dispel some of the misconceptions out there, in this video, we'll cover in detail all 4 seasons in Oklahoma--- and yes, we do have 4 distinct seasons---and hopefully lay to rest some of the incorrect info that people may have heard in the course of their research about this place.
1) Spring in Oklahoma - The season that gets the most publicity and the source of most misinformation...Violent weather does occur here from time to time but the large storms that produce deadly tornadoes (like the one we experienced on May 3rd, 1999) are rare in occurrence. When storms do fire up, local TV weather coverage, forecasting, and radar technology here are state-of-the-art so you always will have plenty of time to prepare. In recent years, the threat of large hail and potential damage to property has been a greater concern...
2) Summer in Oklahoma - HOT and HUMID pretty much sums it up. Triple-digit temps are the norm in late July and August. Adding to the misery, the wind blows non-stop, nearly year-round in Oklahoma, and usually always from the south. Just make sure your AC is working properly or it might be a VERY long summer...
3) Fall in Oklahoma - Still hot and humid until late October but hey, at least it's the start of football season in Oklahoma. Attending games in Norman OK (University of Oklahoma) or Stillwater OK (Oklahoma State University) are a real treat but remember to stay hydrated because early-season games are HOT! After October, temps begin to cool and the leaves begin to change, and fall colors return to Oklahoma.
4) Winter in Oklahoma - Pretty moderate in that we typically only get 7 or 8 inches of total snow during the entire winter season. Unfortunately, White Christmases are a rarity around here. Sub 0 temps here are also VERY rare...The more significant threat in Oklahoma is ice and the occasional ice storm can really be disruptive, with power outages and travel greatly restricted as a result.
The truth is, for whatever reason, I find that the stories told about the weather here are often greatly exaggerated. In fact, other than a few weeks in April and May, the weather here is actually pretty tame and SHOULD NOT discourage you from making this place your home. This is a GREAT place to live with Oklahoma's low cost of living, Oklahoma's affordable housing, friendly people, and laid-back, relaxed lifestyle. Whether you're moving to Oklahoma City, moving to Edmond, or elsewhere local, give me a call and let's talk---even if it's about the weather!
