Flying foxes compete with migratory birds and whales in being some of the most mobile mammals on earth, allowing them to play a crucial role in Australian pollination and seed dispersal.
Australia is home to four species of flying fox and all are protected under the Nature Conservation Act 1992. The two main species we see in the Burdekin Dry Tropics area are Little Red (Pteropus scapulatus) and Black (Pteropus Alecto) flying foxes.
Both Little Red and Black Flying foxes prefer to eat blossom (pollen and nectar) of native trees, however substitute their diet with fruit when other food is limited. Flying foxes are keystone pollinators of more than 50 native trees, and ecosystem engineers through pollination and seed dispersal. Australian Hardwood species rely heavily on pollination from flying foxes.
