“If there’s a serious problem, the pilot will say ‘Get out, get out, get out’. Duck as he releases the canopy, pull the emergency release on your harness, then stand up - there’ll be a bit of a breeze - then dive towards the wing root on either side of the aircraft. Make sure you dive. If you don’t, you’ll hit the tail and that’ll sure leave a bruise. Once you’re clear, pull the d-ring on your parachute, then take a selfie on the way down. Have a good flight!”
Not the usual pre-flight briefing but it wasn’t the usual flight: in May, I flew in 74 year-old P-51 Mustang. And I didn’t just get to fly in it: I actually got to fly it. I even did several slow rolls. It was all quite amazing and I’m still a little giddy from the experience.
