It is so gratifying and an honor to see this side of Joe's personality. At times the "ice pilots" show seemed to fixate on Joe's grumpy side, but you can tell from this video he is so passionate about aviation, and respecting the art of flying these old warbirds. He genuinely loves to teach young pilots honest hard work, and respect for the job (safety, risks, etc). Yes he has no time for BS, but like so many mentors I've had in life, he's tough on you because he wants to challenge you to be the best you can be - it always comes from a place of caring. Thank you Mikey for this opportunity to "fly" with Joe.

I spent my younger years before I became a CR pilot at Points North Saskatchewan. I got to ride and fly in a lot of wonderful aircraft including the DC-3's they had CQT and NTF. I would love to go have a beer with Joe and talk to him about flying these aircraft. He is 100% correct the aircraft is surprisingly stable and yet responsive as long as pitch, power and trim are managed properly. I loved flying DC-3's for the same reason I loved flying helicopters. They have to be flown. They are tactile aircraft you have to fly but like being around a big dog you learn not to startle them and as long as you don't startle them it's almost effortless. "When we're up here, we're free" truer words were never spoken. Excellent video thanks for posting.

My first flight in the late 50's was a DC3 from Alamosa CO to Denver with my dad. The next time we did that flight we lost the right engine about 15 minutes out of Denver heading in. I saw the smoke and the pilot feathered the engine. My dad closed the curtain. Great memory and I have always loved DC-3's! Fly on Joe, fly on.

Mikey I’ve got to admit, that old DC-3 of your dads is a beautiful lady, tall, sleek, smooth and her twin engines sound like a heavenly hum, I’ve been up in the one at the Yankee Air Museum at Willow Run Michigan and the big agile C-47 was equal to operating an old Cadillac, you don’t fly them, you become a part of the plane, feel the controls respond, caress the plane and let her know your there to maintain and keep her happy through each and every flight. Nothing in my mind is so relaxing as being able to have the honor of flying these old war horses, their so robust, reliable, sturdy that they will be around for many many more years to come. One day I’d love to be able to become a pilot of a dc-3 or C-47 maybe even a “Connie” Pilot. Your dad has instilled a lifelong love and passion for these aircraft in you, he’s done well, he’s the exact person to teach, train and share his undying love for these tall majestic ladies.

Who needs tv when we have this! What an excellent job. Always love seeing home from the air. Funny how hindsight is always 20/20. I would have more than likely pursued flying regardless of my home life as a kid, had I known I could have found a place to fly real airplanes with metal and cables and pistons in the beautiful but challenging north. I get to fly all over the North with my job I have now, which is great, but after having been handed the controls once, even if it was just a 185 on floats, I get it. I love Joe’s description of freedom. So now, I find myself here, but if I want to get flying, I need to leave here to go to school. But, there won’t always be an opportunity to fly these old birds. Well, honestly, they’ll probably be regulated out of existence or run out of spares before they actually ever die. Joe is such a cool guy. Appreciates real machines, real flying. I always love hearing those radials thundering overhead on takeoff. The only other sound that gets this half-scot in the feels like that is the bagpipes. Maybe someday I’ll be at the controls going up the Valley or to some arctic island? A guy can hope, right? Here’s to many more safe and successful flights for Joe and the rest of his flyers. Pay attention, yungins!

I love these old DC-3's. I remember sometimes they would be called "combines". Freight in the front then a wall or partition then a few seats in the back part for passengers. Freight would go in the front part because it was always heavier than the passengers so the load would be centered properly. Hence the name "combine" because it was a combination of freight and passengers. This term came from the 1800's when railroad cars were like that. One half of the car was for freight and mail such as postal or dry goods and the other half would be for passengers.

It is more than 30 years ago and I enjoy seeing these aircraft still flying. I remember we once had to pull start the port side engine with freight straps because the batteries were dead. Those that wonder how that can be, the strap was rapped around the prop hub and we pulled it thus turning the engine. Some good old memories. Excellent videos Mikey!
