Advise against warming up before driving. It drags out the cold start and prolongs fuel wash in the cylinders and hinders the oil from lubricating the cylinder walls. Can eventually lead to bore scoring. Start and drive right away and keep it under 3k rpm until temperature rises.

@DKL997

Hah came to say the same thing. Yeah I learned about all of this when I bought my 997. The reason to let it warm is because fluids work well within certain temperature ranges. Engine oil usually needs a minimum of around 175 degrees to perform optimally. Most fluids in a car provide lubrication which helps protect all of the metal parts from grinding on each other. Be more gentle with the car until its lubricating fluids are able to provide optimal protection, and of course change those fluids regularly to keep them fresh.

I'm 55 now and I finally bought my own Porsche (although I opted to get a 2014 Cayman S). I absolutely love it and I have the same smile every time I look at it and especially when I drive it. Oh man you reminded me how I felt taking my first 911 home. It’s a magical experience that most people will never understand. Welcome to the club. Oh hey a note on warming it up. Don’t let it idle for long. Just a minute or two max if it’s cold. Then drive it but gently, not over 3k rpm, until oil temp hits around 175. This will *probably* help avoid the infamous bore scoring. Letting it idle for a long time cold is probably what causes bore scoring.

Fun video. Welcome to 996 ownership. They are great cars and hope you enjoy your ownership. One tip on warmups, according to the experts allowing the car to idle during warmup is actually not advised. The warmup procedure should be to start the vehicle and drive it immediately with "mechanical sympathy" not beyond 4k RPMS until reaching operating temperature. This brings the car up to temperature quickly, the most damage to the cylinders occurs during cold idle/warmup, best to get up to temperature quickly and safely.

Please DO NOT warm up a Porsche flat 6. The M96 engines have bore score issues and letting them sit and idle can be bad for them. Start it and drive away. Keeps RPMs under 3k for the first 15-20 minutes, then you can give it the beans!

@@nhpstudio thank you. Mine is very rare spec. Targa was never offered with Aero kit but mine has it and it’s Orient metallic red color with gray interior. Enjoy the Porsche ownership!

So excited for you! My first is a 914…special connection….was owned by my aunt and I bought it 28 years later not knowing it s was her car, Same level of excitement, in my case, to reassemble and build it into the car I wanted. Congratulations, your car looks fantastic! Oh, and of course next one is a 997.2 with a Six-Speed. Colour is optional C2S

If it wasn't for it being a 996 with those egg yolk headlights I'd be more into it. That said I get you wanted a birth year one. Congrats man. Still saving for mine!

I am from the Robbinsville, the town you drove through to get to the Tail of The Dragon. I remember seeing my first Porshe 911 in person and fell in love with them.

Congrats on your first 911! Love that the 996s are being appreciated now. Btw - Aerokit + that rear wiper = a super rare build. You did really well buying it off Rennlist.
