In 2002 RollerCoaster! Magazine published my article 'Bring Back the Bartlett Flying Turns.' John Fetterman of Knoebels Grove, PA showed the article to Dick Knoebel, as they had been considering options on a new attraction. A positive decision led to years of construction and fine-tuning, with trials and tribulations of making a 1920s/1930s ride work with modern safety standards. Some coaster fans grew impatient, but I knew they had an extremely tough task. Dick Knoebel didn't give up on the project (Knoebels Amusement Resort, Elysburg, PA). Last week I received a nice invitation phone call from Mr. Knoebel to come to the October 4, 2013 VIP soft opening event (thank you Richard Munch!). What you see here is a dream come true, my first real Flying Turns ride since 1967. Friends, this GoPro 3 video is shaky fun, but there is nothing like riding it. It is NOT like the steel bobsled coasters you might have experienced in the last few decades. This is the real deal... The Flying Turns is back! Note the roller coaster celebrities in the station during out departure: Mike Boodley, Richard Munch, Justin Garvanovic and last but not least, Dick Knoebel waving us off on our first ride. Thanks again Mr. Knoebel; awesome event, awesome ride.
