FND is not a purely psychological disorder.
Let’s shout that first from the rooftops. 📣📣📣
And we cannot ignore the psychosocial influences or impact.
In the days of Freud, it was known as conversion disorder-meaning someone subconsciously repressed experiences and these got “converted” into physical symptoms. We now know that is likely to simple of an explanation-our brains much more complex than that. And frankly, most folks do not have trauma before their symptoms (we can talk about all of the medical trauma and stigma that occurs afterward-that’s another story)
However, we do know that there is likely a subset of folks with adverse childhood events or trauma that develop FND (by the way, folks develop a lot of other disorders, too-because ACEs are common in the population)
So, I shared some great resources today
First-two articles the highlight the possible trauma subtype of FND:
This first one I reviewed describes the relationship of trauma and PTSD to FND in a subset of people
Paredes-Echeverri S, Guthrie AJ, Perez DL. Toward a possible trauma subtype of functional neurological disorder: Impact on symptom severity and physical health [published correction appears in Front Psychiatry. 2023 Apr 18;14:1192755.
This second one was very fascinating to describe the potential WHY-brain areas and possible genetic contributions.
Diez I, Larson AG, Nakhate V, et al. Early-life trauma endophenotypes and brain circuit-gene expression relationships in functional neurological (conversion) disorder. Mol Psychiatry. 2021;26(8):3817-3828. doi:10.1038/s41380-020-0665-0
And a favorite article to describe these new understandings particularly to psychologists-a must share with your psychologist, psychiatrist or anyone else new to FND.
Keatley E, Molton I. A Shift in Approach: Assessment and Treatment of Adults With Functional Neurological Disorder. J Health Serv Psychol. 2022;48(2):79-87. doi:10.1007/s42843-022-00061-w
