In 2021, FNFD embarked on a remarkable initiative by hosting a captivating runway at the Barunga Festival in the Northern Territory. This iconic event, established in 1985, serves as a cultural hub, uniting communities from the Kimberley region to celebrate the richness of Indigenous music, culture, sport, and fashion.
As part of our engagement at the festival, FNFD went beyond the runway, conducting enlightening workshops and fostering meaningful discussions in yarning circles. Collaborating with five esteemed art centers-Anindilyakwa Arts, Ngukurr Arts, Babbarra Designs, Merrepen Arts, and Djilpin Arts-FNFD extended a heartfelt invitation to two to three women from each community. These extraordinary women graced the runway in the spirit of "Wimun Walking on Kantri," a powerful concept translating to "women walking on country" in Kriol.
Join us as we reflect on this transformative journey, where fashion, culture, and community converged on the Barunga Festival stage, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of Indigenous expression.
