I had a friend who owned a jumping mule, one day it was in her front yard and she straight up told him the get his rear back in the pasture. He snorted at her, calming walked up to the 5ft fence, flat-footed jumped said fence, and turned back around with a look that just radiated an "are you happy now?" vibe. That mule was the sweetest thing but he had an attitude for sure. 😂

It is fortunate for horse owners that most horses don't realize how high they can jump. One year I had two different weanlings hope over a 5 foot fence. One jumped right back in again. That same year, I had a 2 year old jump over a pipe corral, across the space in between and into the pasture. It was an odd year. I've never had that happen before or since. One year I did have a yearling colt jump 3 fences over 5' high, one over 5.5' high. We were gelding colts and he didn't want to participate. And it was because of him we were doing them early. He was way too studdy which is unusual in thoroughbreds. A lot of them don't even realize they're colts until they're 3 or older. He woke up at 7-8 months!

Beautiful, but just so people know you do not want to do this often with your foals until they are at least 4 years old. You can permanently harm their joints and growth plates. A photo op is probably ok but not a regular part of training. Stick to ground poles once a week when they turn 1

It's one thing to let a foal find their feet and jump stuff of their own accord, but given breeders and buyers are obsessed with free-jumping babies, whose bodies need to physically mature, I wouldn't be surprised if these foals were "encouraged"... beautiful jumping technique, yes. But let the poor things grow up before screwing their immature bodies. And that's coming from a show jumper, so don't call me anti-jumping or some such label. I'm just kind to horses, know the right thing is to let them grow up first, and make sure that's what I do. What a shame there are so many selfish idiots accepting what shouldn't be done to a young horse. Especially a foal.

Question to you do you breed horses so you would have foals around. They will free jump a log in the pasture and clear it by 3’+ and it was only 8”. I mean really, I have seen foals, weanlings, yearlings jumping higher than what they were jumping just all in their own with jumps in their paddock. Do you feel like all breeders and show people are mean and not kind as you. Most treat their horses 100x better than back yard owners who think they are being kind to let their poor horses stand outside in the summer and get eat up by flies when ours are in the barn under fans standing in front of them snoring away and no flies. Or out in the freezing rain instead in a nice warm barn bedded down in 8-12” of sawdust. When was the last time they cleaned out under their bellies, and clean the udders in mares or sheaths on geldings. Or their docks. We have chiropractors, massage therapists to keep them in good shape. And the monthly vet bills for a barn full of horses would kill these so called kind horse owners - because we want to make sure they are healthy, they get xrayed, scanned and scoped at a minutes notice. The farrier comes every 4-6 weeks, and every 6 months the equine dentist comes to do teeth. The vet is every 6 months. They have individual bridles, many custom saddles and bridles made for them. Some even spend the money to get custom bits just to make sure they are comfortable, others go through many many bits off the shelf to find the one that makes their mouths comfortable.. the same with their saddles. They have summer sheets, fall blankets, and winter blankets. They are kept blanketed and hooded in winter so their hair stays slick and short so we can work them through out the winter and then they won’t get sick with being put up with wet coats, they dry fast with a good toweling, and 1/2 hour to 45 minutes cool out walking. Your typical backyard owner rides their horse one or two days a week, mostly on the weekend, they ride hard and fast with those heavy long coats, and usually just bring them back, strip the tack and wave a brush over them and just turn them loose in the pasture. They aren’t going to do what devoted horse owners do, we are there 7 days a week, first thing in the morning feeding and haying before we go to work for 8 hours, and then back at night to clean stalls, work them 6 days a week, cool out etc. we spend from 6:30-7 pm to almost midnight each night doing what needs to be done. Some horses are only bitted and ground work done, others just get a light 10-15/20 minutes under saddle and others get a 20-30 minutes to start getting them legged up. Once a horse is fit and trained, it doesn’t take a lot to keep them there. And younger 2-4 year olds need more short sessions each day rather than one long one. I have worked one in the morning and then again that night 6 days a week all winter. Each horse is different as to what they need, how they learn, and how you need to work with them. And this is all standard in most barns. Are there some back yard owners who shouldn’t be breeding or showing - yes. Same with dogs. But most professionals are not so greedy and mean as you seem to think. They love their horses and get very attached. Now are there the ones that fly in on daddy’s jet, the trust fund babies who don’t do any thing except step up and ride and pet them on the nose and go back home - yes. But not too many. Many trainers insist they have to take care of their horse to some degree. And I have 50+ years of experience and seen both sides. Are there some who have owners who push that their horse was expensive and if they don’t start training it, pushing it beyond what they have been told by the trainer and vet, Yes there are. They have paid $35k-$100k+ and want results, they want to ride the horse they bought before they grow old. It’s frustrating. This is for all breeds including race horses. These owners don’t realize a horse that’s pulled a tendon may need months off and they don’t like that. These owners are just amateurs, they just know they have spent all this money - it’s really not greediness, etc., it’s just they want to get to showing or watching someone else ride and win. There really isn’t much money in showing. It’s mostly bragging rights. When you see a $25,000 class, the first place horse doesn’t get that, the money is split up over 6-8 ribbon winners. And if someone else rides the horse for you, that winning money goes to the rider not the owner. And the expenses to show are tremendous these days. It can cost couple thousand by the time you pay class fees, association dues, stall fees, bedding, feed, etc and then the transportation to the show, staying in a hotel, and if in a training type barn all the trainer expenses are divided up over all those showing no matter 4 horses, or 20. Then the same for the grooms who practically live in the barn to watch them at night, switching off between their hotel rooms - their expenses are divided too. Some stay all night, it depends on the show whether they have showers etc . Plus if your horse wins, it’s customary to tip the groom could be $50, $100, could be much more. And then the barn decorations, the party expenses ie food, beverages, the stall coverings, etc all is added up and split between those showing. And even though you aren’t at home, you still pay your normal monthly board and training fee. Along with the show expenses, some shows you need to have a vet certificate to say that within the 7- 10 day from the show date, each horse has been checked, is healthy, up to date on vaccines, etc. Then there are the cost for the horses of show sheets, making sure their show tack is in good shape, and if say you can’t afford a buggy if you have a harness horse, or a really nice show saddle, whatever - the trainer has one and rents it to who ever needs it so another fee. And I haven’t included the bedding at the show. You rent the stall, at the most you get a small covering of bedding but most of us want our horses lying on a nice thick layer of shavings so they are comfy. And then there are the fees to pay braiders who are out at 4 in the morning braiding manes and tails. If you want your horse to be massage after classes, or want the chiropractor to check them over - that’s another cost. Some have warm water or cool salt water spa treadmills to work out their muscles so they don’t get sore. All this ads up and yet some people think we don’t care about our horses all of this is a huge expense, even with selling a few, it isn’t even close to break even. I mean some get those special horses that come along one in a million and can make you a large amount of money. But that’s not often. And maybe we do sell a few horses a year, maybe more but it’s not the windfall that some think. Because they don’t know, they haven’t really been to a show. Some never owned a horse much less a show horse. And haven’t bred horses. They make comments for something they don’t know and wouldn’t take the time to know. And race horses are no different, the only thing I don’t like there is I think they should wait until they are 4 years to race. Their bones, joints, and growth plates would all be closed and there would be less damage. And I think they need to concentrate on breeding better conformation horses, larger bones, better shoulders, etc instead of concentrating on so much speed. They need to do something one way or the other. They would be in training in their three year old fall and race in the spring. But that’s better than being a yearling. The issue is they are so expensive to just have them standing around is a lot of money after you have paid $80-$300 thousand and into the millions. I understand they want to see that money doing something besides eating grass. But it’s the racing association that has to make that change and it’s been this way for decades and decades and decades. I don’t like it but I understand it. But the show horses have started going down that path with more and more horses too so I feel something should be done to nip it in the bud although that’s been going on to for at least a couple decades. It used to be to be on driving horses started at 2 and that was okay. No weight on them. As long as if they don’t do obstacle type courses versus just going around the ring, or those with tight corners, or sharp or timed.

Yes, horses should be out in a pasture most of the day, but at night, they should be in a stall in a barn, where predators can't get to. Any horse recovering from a surgery or injury should be on stall rest for a certain amount of time and only be led by hand for exercise. Think before you speak, dude. Disgraceful. Those foals have been jumped time and time again at home. Far too much for soft baby joints and skeletons. DO NOT MAKE FOALS JUMP. I wonder if ANY of these babiesxwill actually make it to compete or wil their Xrays reveal things like ringbone splints and bone malformation on the growth plates. Ive bred plenty of competition ponies and horses and would NEVER EVER 'work' a foal.
