These spray guns are also available at the Depot and at most lumber yards. The cans with the gun fitting are usually available in the standard red gaps & cracks and the window and door type foam.

Do you recommend this method after the drywall goes up for the gap between the floor and the drywall? I want to do everything possible to keep scorpions out. The walls and attic will be spray foam insulated but i want to seal everything possible after that drywall goes up and that gap is a main concern.

I use this product and the different variants of spray. I replace and install steel entrances and freezer doors. While I use the spray acetone that they sell to clean their guns, I also use straight acetone to soak the disassembled parts when I tear down my guns.

What’s your application in a joist void that is deeper than the gun can reach. Conduit pipes etc. I was hoping the nozzle had extensions to get back another 4 to 6 inches.

Go the extra mile and seal between the top plate and drywall in the attic. Also, some of those foam guns can have a plastic straw attached, so you can get foam into tight spots, like a 1/4" gap.

On the Midwest, Menards carries these as well. But I'd really like some tips on how to care for these. I've bought 3 of them, and even using the cleaner, all 3 have gotten completely clogged solid. Also, as far as sealing the penetrations, at least in Minnesota that's a minimum requirement for all walls, as a fire stop. An inspector there would require foam between floor for any and all penetrations like that. So regardless of energy concerns, it's a good practice to follow. Love the channel!

Hey Matt, Are you guys not required to seal penetrations with Intumescent Fire Caulking? Up in Boston the inspectors are crazy about it. They wont accept any foam product as fireblocking. We have to chase the electrician and plumbers holes between bays and through plates.

The real question is what do you do with the remainder of the unused spray foam in the tip of the gun when its not in use? If you just put it away for another day won't it dry up and permanently seal the tip of the gun rendering it unusable?

I found a video from Dow on KZitem where it said you just leave the can attached. There is a shutoff valve on the gun that you turn off. It said you can leave it for up to 30 days. Every 30 days you have to shake the can and spray out a little foam. There is a cleaner can that you can use to clean it. It said only do it every 12 cans if I remember correctly. It warned not to clean it too often.

For a house that is older and are experiencing air leakage, how do you go about finding the spots that you need to fill?
@justinl9947
3 жыл бұрын
There are a couple good ways. If you don't mind paying a couple hundred dollars, get someone to do a blower-door test. They use a big fan to force air into your house (by covering the front door with it) and pressurize it. While the house is pressurized, you can use smoke from a smoke pen (or a candle) to seek places where air is leaking. You can look up how to DIY a blower door which is fine if you want to find leaks but don't care about the test score. You can also wait for a cold day and use an infrared camera to look for warm spots on the outside of the house. Some will be due to air leaks, and some may be places where you need more insulation (also good to discover).

Question I have heard that certain foams are highly flammable. Is there a difference in types of foam? Is there foams you should not use around electrical boxes?
@Ethanjsmith82
7 жыл бұрын
I am not a chemist but I have read that the foam during curing (while dispensing and while it is drying) is HIGHLY flammable but then once cured it does a pretty good job at fireblocking and is for the most part not at all flammable.. Most of the "great stuff" brand pro size cans also are listed as a fireblock compliant (don't know exact spec they follow) substance.

I live in a Single Wide (16'x80') Mobile Home, near Houston TX, the Insulation Missing for quite some time. My thought is to Rigid Foam the entire bottom, for air sealing, then come back with Batt Insulation behind that. I'm not trying to be super cheap, but I'm trying to air seal the Mobile Home as best as I can, with still being able to keep up with maintenance. Would that be the cheapest/best way to do it or is there a better way to Insulate the Bottom of the House? Since it is a mobile home there is skirting at the bottom.

Andrew Logan maybe run thick plastic along the ground underneath and make the perimeter from the wall to the ground the new thermal boundary. add an air tight access door on each end for service. you can then ignore the underside of the floor.
@JoeMalovich

Andrew Logan your plan sounds good, the process is called flash and batt
@mikecampanella1990
7 жыл бұрын
Andrew Logan if the batts are towards the living space and the rigid foam is on the exterior facing the ground, that should work very well. Just use foam and tape the seams to air seal. Also, use a foam like 2" thick to get the best r value. Making the space underneath conditioned like a non vented crawl space would help alot, but one project at a time. Haha.
@Squelch203

You might also consider closed cell spray foam. We had it done on the inside of a metal pole building that was turned into a house and it stopped the sweating problems, increased the rigidity of the structure and added a high R value. We had BIBS added on top of that but could have added more layers of spray foam too. Its more expensive than rigid and batt but the added R value makes it worth while.

My cost for the Straw Great Stuff Gap & Crack Foam was $3.40 per 16 oz can, or 22 cents per ounce. My cost for the Great Stuff Pro Gap & Crack Foam was $11.22 per 24oz can, or 43 cents per ounce. I choose to use the Straw method. I wish the Gun method was a better cost. Also, the Straw Great Stuff cans will not work on the Great Stuff Pro 14 Gun.

Part of the difference is fire rating. The 24oz. is also used as a fireblock. The equivalent in the can is $9.99 for 12oz. While the 24oz. Is still in the $11-$12 range in April 2022.

unless your using at least a full can of the cleaner (compressed acetone), this gun is useless. they clog very easily. the only surefire way to make sure it is clean is to run a full can of cleaner through the gun.
@brianleeper5737

I have two of them and they've never clogged. I've never cleaned them either. I always store them with the gun up, can down. I always keep a can on the gun. I never keep an empty can on the gun, which means I always keep new cans on hand. After changing cans, I make sure to dispense some foam, even if I'm not otherwise going to use it for a while. I also make sure to change cans quickly.

In the counties in Virginia in which I work, I generally end up applying the fire foam as the GC. Inspectors want to see all fire stopping complete at rough in inspection. Waiting for insulators to be on site would mean any insulated stud or joist bays would be inaccessible during the insulation inspection.
